Briton Cuts Living Costs With Move to Chiang Mai

You do what you wish just don't exaggerate and of course if things are so bad it is not compulsory to live in Chiang Mai.

Nobody said it’s compulsory to live in Chiang Mai. Equally, nobody’s obliged to pretend the air quality is brilliant just because they do. 😂

He's living the absolute dream on £800 a month... right up until Burning Season hits, and he has to spend his entire budget on air purifiers and inhalers.

Hope he's paid up his health insurance and has the correct work permit and visa.

He doesn't appear to have any Thai friends

He moved to CM to save on rent. Doubt he is rich. Did you not read the story?

Even if people have money, it does not automatically mean they will spend it, especially at 45 years old, dropping out of work and maybe without any safety net.

Do you spend everything you got? No savings ?

Yes I know but he cut his spending by over 70%. A rich person does not do that. He is a battler.

Some of the biggest cheap one I know, is those with money. There is a reason they have money ;-)

Read the story. He worked in construction and got tired of the long hours needed to live. Now he works online. He's not rich.

"Robert spent years working in construction before deciding to leave the UK. He said he had become frustrated by working long hours simply to cover increasing expenses and felt he had little freedom to enjoy life"

What could possibly go wrong 😱😱🤣🤣🤣🤣

Probably not a good idea to live here if you suffer constantly from poor health.

Normal people don't have health problems.

I'm certainly not normal. 😁😁. But I am very healthy.👍👍

A falang who bangs on about how cheap things (especially services) are in Thailand always has to perform the mental contortion of ignoring how it is the poverty of the Thai people that makes his "new life" in the kingdom possible.

For example: tipping. More often than not I see couples ordering a supper, worth ~500-800 baht in a restaurant in Hua Hin (Kao Takiab). I very frequently see the "rich" falang either leave NOTHING on the plate or, worse in some ways, a mere 20 baht.

Imagine having the courage to leave a tip of £2 in a London restaurant. He would doubtless be stabbed......

It's still there according to a month old review on google. Ground level. Yeah it's great for northern food. Best one I've been to. Korat has a nice one too in that mall where the shooting occurred.

Best thing about the Northern food court in the basement at Airport plaza is the Southern food stall in the far corner...

Tipping is optional. I never tip 20 baht in a restaurant. Krapow Moo is 45 baht in my Bangkok regular. Cafe Boran is 25 baht.

Thai wages are low but farangs spend money helping the economy. There is also dual pricing. Stuff tipping when you have to pay 5x the Thai price!

Good luck to him ,, hope it works out

If you like southern food. I find it too spicy. Maya Mall has southern food too.

But you won't adress it as healthy, will you, if I think of rushers, sauasages, beans, and pudding😄

If you exercise enough almost all food is healthy.

It's inactivity that kills you.

I enjoyed my lunch, served with a wine cooler.

Pugging was that strange coconut cube jelly they sell next to the yoghurts in Makro.

That's a pity as you spend time in the South and are spoilt for choice................

Thai people rarely tip, it's an American habit formed by unscrupulous employers underpaying their staff.

I never tipped at all when I lived in London.

Think of tipping as 'Tamboon'...............everyone's a winner

5 baht is enough.

Well i'm having a house built up in Issan mostly of wood but built by a profestional the house will all have falang fittings. Built next door to the girlfriends mums house so didn't pay for land or any legal fees. All and all comes in just under 4 thousand pounds. I will spend six months there and six months here in uk. At 68 will do me. Even if it goes tits up i dont lose a pension or millions in baht.

But you don't know his total budget. He might be happy on 35,000 but could afford more.

I agree, I see teacher's income around 25k baht a month living quite happily but most are here not long term.

A middle aged guy, to live here for the rest of his life comfortably he'd need to rent decent accommodation, buy a car/motorbike, hobbies etc it adds up each month

Crikey, I can spend 35k baht going with the girlfriend to the village for a couple of weeks.

And good on them but we are not talking about Thai's.

A foreigner Living in Thailand has so many more outgoings, payments etc. to survive

House paid, have solar so no electric, EV, wife for some reason pays for water every month so below are my expenses. If you need expensive things to make you happy then by all means spend the money if it truly makes you happy. I'm lucky - I don't need much in regards to material things other than a comfortable home and a nice view.

Internet - 450 baht
Food ( not restaurants ) - 10k (me only. Wife buys most of her stuff )
Health Insurance - 4m coverage - 1200

Vehicle insurance and annual fees - 1000
Misc expenses ( not entertainment )- 5k

That comes to 17,650 baht. 35k would be easy for me. I spend more than 35k because I buy silly things I arguably don't need.

I spend less now than 10 years ago even though prices have gone up. I don't need to eat fancy or whatever.
