A foreign resident living in Mae Nam, Koh Samui, in Surat Thani province has filed a formal complaint to Koh Samui Municipality over persistent noise from crowing roosters, which he says has disrupted his sleep for around seven months. The complaint, dated 24 June, has attracted attention from local residents and social media users.

According to the submitted document, the resident reports that approximately three roosters in a nearby area have been crowing repeatedly from the early hours of the morning, starting around 3am. The birds are said to crow frequently at intervals of about every three minutes, creating ongoing disturbance throughout the early morning period. The complainant states that the issue has continued daily for several months.

The resident further claims that the prolonged noise has affected his ability to rest properly and has led to ongoing discomfort and sleep deprivation. He also notes visible signs of fatigue, including dark under-eye circles and physical stress symptoms, which he attributes to the extended period of disrupted sleep. The situation has reportedly persisted for around seven months without resolution.

The complaint indicates that the resident has previously raised the matter with relevant local authorities, and that officials have visited the area to investigate. However, he maintains that the noise problem has continued despite these inspections, prompting him to submit a formal request for further action under municipal powers.

The Daily News reported that the local authorities have not yet issued a detailed public response regarding the case. It remains unclear what measures, if any, will be taken to address the issue or mediate between the parties involved. The situation is still under review.

Not sure he will get much mileage with the complaint, a local keeping a few roosters isn't unusual. Had it with a guy up the road from me who kept fighting cocks, they make a fair bit of noise all times of day or night.

This is because some one is keeping roosters in their houses, unlike here' in pattaya, what the locals calls this bird ''nok kawawo'' the super noisy myna bird that are everywhere and start their ear splitting calls 6 am in 10 min. intervals.

Smart thing to do would be to withdraw the complaint and move. He's not going to get ANY support from the Thai community, and a complaint like this is just going to enflame anti-foreigner sentiment which is already on the rise due to land ownership tensions and cases of misbehavior involving foreigners which, in my opinion, are being deliberately over-publicized in the media.

He should move back to the Big City, where he obviously is from. Roosters, Ducks, Birds, Goats, Geckos, Lizards, Frogs, Crickets, Bees, Chickens, it goes on and on. They all make noise. When you move to a tropical island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand you get the environment that comes with it. The Thai people, their animals and the natural habitat were here first.

I would tell him to try and go to sleep an hour or more earlier, so by the time those roosters start calling, before dawn much of the time to establish pecking order, he might have his 8 hours sleep (or whatever he needs personally). He might be staying up late and if they roosters start at 3 AM it might disrupt his lifestyle.

When I'm at my girlfriend's house, the rooster that lives there also starts before dawn, and there aren't any other chickens within hearing anyway, but I usually arise at 04:30 anyway, so it's not a problem. Back in Texas I usually woke at 06:00 or so, so I've adjusted while living here. There is more wildlife here than in cities, where he might have come from, so it's on him to adjust so he fits in.

The much bigger problem here is humans who blast music all through the night, no matter where you live, for weddings and such, so a noise ordinance should be enforced for that, as it shows a complete lack of concern for the elderly here.

Isn't this like calling the police on New Year's Eve and complaining about a loud party. Yes and I had to respond to such calls . I once told the caller "to get a life and enjoy the evening". What is the Thai equivalent name for Karen?

I came up with this formula which has helped me find a peaceful balance over when loud music can reasonably be complained about. Basically, I weigh the social benefit that people are gaining from the loud music. If it is a large group of people, you have to respect the social benefit that is being derived. On the other hand, if it's some jerk by himself cranking up the tunes for himself and maybe a couple of his meth head buddies, then a complaint has more legitimacy. So for me it's strictly off-limits to complain about any event at a temple, or at a funeral, ordination ceremony, or wedding. All you're gonna accomplish is making yourself a social pariah, and possibly getting your butt kicked.

I absolutely HATE rooters crowing, dogs barking, etc. My solution? Move into a condo high up enough that, even if the little bastards angels are greeting each other at all hours of the night, they're far away enough that it doesn't bother me. Anyone who has been in Thailand long enough realizes what a ridiculous fight this is to take on. The neighborhood will find out soon enough exactly who made the complaint and he or she will be a pariah forever there.

You clearly have not much experience with Thai roosters, they go on all night and day sometimes here. Same many in Samui are also fighting ones. Not sure what this clown from the news tries to achieve however, there worse noise pollutions all over the islands from bad live music places to other things.

I lived near a place that terrorizes 200 people with live music even they only have 4-6 customers a night, and are 5 minutes from the district office, zero is doe about it. Only during those big raids, everyone closed for a few nights, which says enough.

Same with this so called raids on the islands, 9/10 opened again the next day and kept their properties. Meanwhile we are at a all time low with tourism (both last high season and until to date), and the 60 day visa is still alive too.

Which gives you an idea, how much worse it will get, due to all these actions, that is not even factored in yet. To have a rooster would be a blessing for me, at least on rural areas in Samui we still have full nature, animals, birds, eagles, buffalos.

I can hear one moaning while we speak.

That's why I never buy a condo, only rent. I can move any time, and I HAVE had nasty neighbors that made it necessary to move away.

In the 10 years that I lived on Samui I rarely ever didn't hear roosters. There were Burmese workers who had a little camp behind the house that we lived in up on the hill, and they had dozens of roosters. The worst are the fighting cocks who go off all day long.

The guy who owned the resort that we leased property from agreed that they were a nuisance and lent me his rifle so that I could go out and take them all out, which I did with glee. The Burmese guys got a little upset and complained to him and he said well hey you're making a lot of noise and the neighbors don't like it. They replaced the roosters one more time, I wiped them all out again, and then they never got another one.

Life sometimes offers problems to which there are solutions.

This is something I'm incredibly proud of to this day, there are literally not enough roosters in the world to go around killing.

They are one of the most annoying animals on the planet especially the fighting breeds.

From my point of view possessing roosters if you live within 200 M of another human being is a violation that warrants that your roosters be exterminated. We all have our pet peeves and roosters for me are at the very top of my list.

Thank you. Nothing about masculinity it was just about peace of mind and quiet which are things that I cherish.

My guess is that you would not have any qualms about eating chicken, but somehow killing very annoying and noisy roosters is evil to you. The owner of rhe land they were on asked them first to get rid of them, and when they didn't comply I took action into my own hands, with his blessing. He even supplied the rifle and ammunition. And I have to admit it was a whole lot of fun.
