Fingerprint checking to be introduced for extensions?

Featured Replies

As usual those with dubious histories are the first to shout . Personally having been issued with an ID sibce I was 16 years old I found it the best bit of info I carried around, saved me on numerous occasions, on one occasion a Photographic ID card was not accepted the shop preferred a DF/L or House bill to prove m,y name and address. ID cards are great the biggest problem is the ignorant public.

Why, what are you afraid of? It seems like a great idea and certainly something that needs to be done to weed out the foreign criminal element.

  • Every time you enter Thailand your fingerprints are recorded anyway. No need to worry about one additional time at immigration.

They have zero chance of doing that. It will of course only pick up convictions inside Thailand for they have access to literally nothing else - and they already know about any convictions inside Thai

Who doesn't have an ID card?

Don't understand your post. This thread is about a possible fingerprint check for extensions.

Had occasion to visit my designated Immigration office (Nakhon Pathom) this morning. Arrived early and the office was empty.

Low and behold on the three Extension of Stay desks there were some new ‘toys’, which as far as I can recall, weren’t there when I last visited.

As per attached photos… The black box on the left is a standard E-Passport reader.  The black box next to it is a fingerprint scanner.  FYI… The camera on poles was there on my previous visit.

Now I wonder why these ‘toys’ have appeared next to the Extension of Stay desks?

Looks like a great way to ensure that the applicant shows up in person.

Problem is that immigration does not provide alternative for folk with health issues or mobility problem

And then all dodgy Chinese/Cambodian/ Et Al would have health issues or mobility problem.

Sad but true.

Like all the Indians at airports with wheelchairs.

I can't see what the fuss is. Not many Extensions require background criminal checks, and now those that do will need the full fingerprint version, that many have needed for other reasons before. Just adds some time to the process, but will only affect very few.

True however thinking can be fetted for annual extension.

Not that it's of interest but I'm possibly one more extension away from not being possible to attend immigration in person.

Not looking for pity rather pointing out issue many face and that number will increase.

If this means I'll be able to sign all my documents with a thumbprint, I'm all for it. 😁

The same system they have at the airport. You're supposed to put fingers and thumbs on the scanner separately? both hands? when I do it it simply goes green at the first attempt. So local Imm. office should be no different unless of course it is not an interconnected national system?

I've never been required to give fingerprints at any airport, any reason why?

I have; in Europe and Thailand.

As per @VocalNeal Suvarnabhumi often goes green immediately.

The only reason that comes to mind is that you haven't flown into or out of Thailand in recent years.

I've flown in and out numerous times in the 12+ years I've lived in Thailand.

My older passport never worked at the automatic gates entering the UK, since Thai Immigration put staple through the chip, but I've never been fingerprinted at anytime, anywhere, well not for travel purposes.

It must be great to be a diplomat:

Guidelines on Protocol Practice 2024

Diplomatic Privileges and Immunities

12. Biometrics Data Collection (page 18)

According to the Immigration Bureau, the collection of Biometrics Data (fingerprint scanning measure upon entry into Thailand) shall be exempted for all members of the DCIOs who are holders of Diplomatic Passport.

Don't play silly, I think you know that my point was that THAILAND introduced fingerprinting at all borders (including airports) quite some years ago. Not limited to automatic gates either. So the question remains why your fingerprints have never been scanned at a Thai airport.

Thailand officially introduced its nationwide biometric system, which includes digital fingerprint and facial recognition scans, at its airports on July 1, 2019.

BTW my last entry to Thailand was AUG 2019 after a long-haul back from US and I don't remember hardly anything once in Bangkok

I think people are getting confused. Thailand has used fingerprint scans at airports for a while now and these are linked to the Immigration database. It would be logical if they start being used at local Immigration offices. However, a criminal background check is something you get from the police, to show that you do not have a criminal background in Thailand, and is not linked to immigration. It seems this was sometimes provided by just a letter, rather than fingerprints. Now it will have to be the full fingerprint police check, should you need one.

Again, I've been asked to remove my spectacles for facial recognition purposes, but never requested to scan my fingerprints.

As we all do fingerprints on entry at Swampy, that's very strange.

Sorry, but such a statement has zero credibility. If that happens once, okay, maybe the machine is broken. But by your own account you've been coming and going, so I simply don't buy it.

I don't care if you buy it or not, the fact remains, and I would know if I'd ever been asked to scan my fingerprints.

Since 1st July, 2023, the date they supposedly introduced fingerprint scanning, I've exited and returned twice, both times on a re-entry permit, and both times through the Thai channel.

Do they have fingerprint scanners on the Thai channel?

Yes.

I entered last month with my wife through the Thai channel and I had to do finger print scan as I always have to do when entering or departing Thailand at Swampy. Very strange that you have been exempt.

You clearly live in a parallel universe, not least because fingerprints have been scanned at airports since 2019, not 2023 as you claim. Granted, most people didn't travel a lot (if at all) during the Covid years, but still. "Thai lanes" aren't set up any differently, as foreigners are frequently redirected to them and as some foreigners can use them anyway.

Yes I went through a Thai lane @ sawampypoom with my wife in January 2025 and was a bit shocked that they demanded both fingerprints and a face scan..I had not entered Thailand by air for quite a few years beforehand, avoided all travel during the 'covidiocy' as I really didn't want my brain raped with a nasal swab or to be mandatory injected with experimental concoctions and locked up in quarantine regardless of being jabbed and poked !! 🤮

"Shocked"....really?

A standard facial scan and a brief fingerprint scan................................. standard at most international airports - and if you had been through Hong Kong or Singapore you would see the benefits of digitalisation..... Thailand is getting there.

Yes I was was a bit shocked as I had been coming and going to Thailand since 1996

(never been to Hong Kong/China..nearly did but Tiananmen Square )

with no such requirements they of course had been tracking my passport and face

for a long time covertly but the fingerprints was the most shocking bit...I suppose later they will want Iris and DNA scans and the 'donuts' will fully support that too ??

Apologies, I meant 1st July 2019, that doesn't alter that I've never had to scan my fingerprints.

Odd as it may be and contrary to other reports, it's fact.

I just asked the wife if either of us had to scan fingerprints on our last entry, and she confirmed we didn't.

I like many not married to Thai national do not use Thai lanes.

I scan fingerprints every entry.

Frankly IMO useless thread.

If becomes practice at annual extensions then fine.

Does nothing. Certainly not a police background check.
