Fifty-seven years ago today, two Americans made history by stepping onto the moon. This is an achievement that no European has yet matched.

On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon after reaching its surface in their Apollo 11 lunar module.

No.

Mr. Aldrin went by the nic Buzz. Met him a few times as he remarried a lady that my parents knew. Really great guy, animated when discussing the Apollo 11 mission.

This must have taken place in either Pattaya or Las Vegas.

It were the European Nazi's who made it possible for them to reach the moon, but you don't like Nazi's, do you Ted?

On July 20, 1969, a crew of American astronauts successfully landed on the moon for the first time. Though only three of them were in the spacecraft, thousands of people had contributed their brainpower to put the astronauts in flight.

Among the contributors: German scientists who had been members of the Nazi Party. The United States recruited them in the years after World War II under a federal program called Operation Paperclip.

One participant was German scientist Wernher von Braun. Von Braun’s crowning achievement in Germany had been the creation of the V-2 rocket, a ballistic missile that could strike long-distance targets. He also had been an officer in the SS, an elite paramilitary organization dedicated to the Nazi Party.

Other ex-Nazis involved in the space program included Kurt Debus, another former SS member, who became the first director of the Kennedy Space Center. Hubertus Strughold pioneered research on space medicine—and was posthumously scrutinized for his role in conducting medical experiments on subjects incarcerated in concentration camps during the war.

Arthur Rudolph was one of Rickhey’s subordinates at Mittelwerk, where he managed rocket production. In the United States, Rudolph helped develop the Saturn V launch rocket that enabled the American mission to the moon in 1969.

Those were two great men from the USA.

I remember, at about ten years of age, eagerly listening to the live radio broadcast of the Moon landing late at night in my college dormitory, together with the hostel chaplain and a group of fellow boarders.

Today, one American has managed to make the entire world feel the consequences.

It's a record I sincerely hope no European, or anyone else, will ever be tempted to break.

60% of Americans today have British genes (probably closer to 90+% 250 years ago) so it was basically just a family squabble

Oh.

I thought you meant TODAY, as in ....

Today, 2026.

IF they are still walking around on the Moon, today, then....

There must be something wrong with them.

And today marks 57 years of ‘the moon landing never happened’ conspiracy nuts failing to get the help they need.

Which is why those from the UK should look at Americans more favorably. We're all from "over there somewhere" by ancestry anyway.

I remember at 10 years old watching this event 'live' on our black and white TV in Leicester (UK). In fact, half the world watched........

Americans, Britons, Europeans... they like to pretend they're worlds apart, but they're all from the same mould.

Yes, but I think the mouth got disproportional over the years. giggle

This level of ignorance was already explained 57 years ago from which you might learn. Armstrong said it was a step for human kind, and didn't nationalize it with nonsense like this. You frame space exploration as a competition, but the real progress has come from collaboration. Science and discovery thrive when shared, not scored.

There is a comedy song about Wernher Von Braun...and his contribution to American rocket science.

They did indeed walk on the moon... on a Hollywood backlot.
