A 15 year old male pupil suffered a broken neck and serious injuries after falling through an old sheet roof at a school in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi, on 24 July. The boy had climbed onto the roof during the lunch break to retrieve headphones he had dropped there while speaking to his mother on the telephone, a teacher said. He was taken urgently to hospital and admitted to intensive care. Police were alerted by a teacher at the secondary school in Bang Khu Wiang, Bang Kruai district. Pol Col Phasakorn Chai Thaweewong, superintendent of Plai Bang Police Station, coordinated with emergency responders to transfer the injured pupil to hospital. Old roof gives way At the school, officers found a large hole in the sheet roof connecting two buildings over a covered corridor. Broken roofing and pieces of wood were scattered on the ground below. According to a teacher, the pupil had attempted to climb down onto the roof to collect the headphones. The roof sheeting was old and gave way under his weight, causing the roof to collapse under him. His head struck a wooden board on the ground. He was seriously hurt and suffered convulsions before rescue workers rushed him to the hospital's ICU. An initial hospital assessment found that he had fractured his neck, the teacher said. School warns pupils after fall The school has since issued a warning to pupils about the dangers of climbing outside buildings, particularly onto roofs and other areas not designed for access.
