A white-bearded man looks straight into the camera, in the video circulating for the past few weeks on social media. “I killed my wife,” he says calmly in Urdu. “We have a give-and-take arrangement and when she refused to give, I said I would take.” Hours earlier, the 64-year-old had walked into a police station in Karachi’s Orangi neighbourhood and confessed to murdering Asma Begum, a 58-year-old mother of four, in the home they shared because she had refused him sex.

“If the woman has been killed in the process, they will say, she fell, she took poison, she burnt herself, or she committed suicide. In the last case, they often stage the entire event by hanging a flimsy scarf from a ceiling fan.”

Her experience with such cases, Tariq says, has shown her that many men do not see women as human beings, but as objects. “It baffles me no end – even if there is little love, where is the companionship and friendship?”

Disturbingly, social media was flooded with videos of men – including lawyers – praising the husband for killing his wife over her “disobedience”, with some legal professionals publicly offering to represent him.

Tariq is not surprised. “I have met mothers-in-law who insist their sons were right to put the fear of God into their wives. They cannot comprehend a wife saying no, and they invoke religion to justify it. The common refrain is that angels would otherwise send their laanat [curse] upon her.”

There is a significant Pakistani diaspora, which has concentrated pockets within the UK. It is a fact, and I am sure that some will condemn me as racist for saying this, but this diaspora has brought these attitudes along with it.

I'll read it, but I've written extensively here about the UK rape gangs. What's interesting is that this article tells us about gender violence at home, a total disregard for women, women as property, dowry killing aso.

I've also found an interesting article about rape culture in Israel. I'll likely post it t'mow.

I was extremely surprised to thread this thread and I was eagerly awaiting the Israel mention in the O.P and I couldn't believe when Israel didn't get a mention .

The degrading of women, forced marriage within the family, enforced veiling. There have been incidents of "honour killing" and disfigurement - "acid burning".

This culture is unacceptable. Pakistan needs leaders to condemn these practices. The judiciary must modernize and align with contemporary values.

Would the world and humanity be worse off without Pakistan and Pakistanis.
