Talks began, involving Kiev and representatives of the Donbass republics, with the support of Russia, Germany, and France." https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/news/1957107/ It's a slog, but if you read this you will see that from Russia's perspective initially there were very limited war aims related to the Russian groups in the Donbass. Of course now Putin is considering taking all the Donbass, given the toll of blood Russia had to pay.
