US and ASEAN Renew Suu Kyi Release Call

The United States and the chair of ASEAN have stepped up pressure on Myanmar’s military, urging the immediate and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.

The appeal comes just days after the 81‑year‑old Nobel laureate was allowed a rare meeting with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Naypyidaw, her first confirmed outside contact in years. Suu Kyi has been held since the February 2021 coup that toppled her elected government, sparking conflict across the country.

In a statement, the ASEAN chair – currently the Philippines – welcomed the ICRC visit and called for it to mark the beginning of regular humanitarian access, including medical care. “We reiterate our call for their release, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s complete and unconditional release,” the bloc said, reaffirming its Five‑Point Consensus peace plan.

The US State Department echoed the demand, posting on X that the meeting should serve as “a pathway to greater access to all political prisoners” and pressing for Suu Kyi’s “immediate and unconditional release”. Washington also urged Myanmar’s generals to engage in dialogue to end the post‑coup conflict.

ASEAN’s special envoy has yet to be granted access to Suu Kyi or other detained leaders, but the bloc insists such engagement is vital to any peace process.

For many observers, the ICRC encounter offers a glimmer of hope that Suu Kyi’s health and welfare may finally receive international oversight. Yet the broader question remains: whether Myanmar’s military will heed mounting calls from its neighbours and the West to ease repression and open the door to reconciliation.
