Thailand or Vietnam: Retirement choices

That accusation caused me to take a quick look at your forum posting content. You aren't really what is casually labelled as a "Thai basher" but you're getting there

I am far from a Thai basher. I'm married to my amazing Thai wife and we have two beautiful children. I have been to LOS more times than I can remember. I loved Thailand for so many reasons. I had adored the country and its people long before I met my wife. We are planning to visit next summer. With that said, I don't always see Thailand with blinders on and tried my best to see things in all perspective.

Vietnam does not have a retirement visa - end of story. If you need to get a job or marry a Vietnamese just to be able to stay in the country long term, that's just not a viable option for people who

What makes you think they can not / will not announce a new retirement visa class in the future? This is true, but at least Vietnam doesn't try to pass itself off as a democracy when it's not, like

You know governments all around the world can repeal laws, in lieu of new updated laws, right?

In July, Thailand passed laws setting out the criteria for the deportation of foreigners. I posted a link to it in another thread.

NB But on that one you got it wrong. They didn't July 26 pass a law. Nothing as yet has changed.

Thailand’s Cabinet has approved in principle a draft administrative regulation intended to establish a more consistent and coordinated procedure for the deportation of foreign nationals who commit certain offences or violate Thailand’s immigration, employment or foreign business laws.

The proposed Regulations of the Office of the Prime Minister on Deportation would not create a new substantive power to deport foreign nationals. Instead, the draft is intended to standardize the administrative process through which relevant government agencies exchange information, refer cases and implement deportation decisions.

Those regs have now gone into effect as in new topic. However from my post:

The proposed Regulations of the Office of the Prime Minister on Deportation would not create a new substantive power to deport foreign nationals.

It has not been noted that VN intends to liberalize their recreational cannabis laws any time soon.

In this new topic I have made a BOLD PREDICTION that the financial requirements for the Thailand OA and O visa (retirement) will NOT be raised within 5 years. The reasons are explained in the post below.

Thailand is not going to miss you

Thailand doesn't miss anyone, and that's the problem. They keep thinking the tourists / expats will just keep coming, so no need for any investment in the industry.

Now, there's genuine competition, and it's showing in the stats. Thailand tourism down 7%, Vietnam tourism up 15%. That gap will widen over the next few years.

Here's a prediction for you.

The 800k / 65k will be raised in the future. Do you agree, or disagree?

If you agree, then all there is to discuss is when, and by how much, and for what purpose.

That's kind of silly.

Sometime in the future of course or they could even end retirement visas completely sometime in the future.

So, you agree it will be raised in the future. Is that correct?

Here's a prediction, next year some of the expats in Thailand will leave, and others will come.

Of course yes eventually if they don't kill the program entirely.
If it's 50 years from now that's basically never to us.

So it's a stupid question really.

You think you have a gotcha when you have a nothing,

6 minutes ago, Jingthing said:

I agree.

It can not stay at 800k / 65k for forever.

Or, it could be announced next week. They have the right PM for it. 🙂

Even if no change for 50 years, thus no effect on us, what is the harm in discussing anyway.

If it's a stupid question, why did you make a "bold prediction" about it? 🙂

10 minutes ago, Jingthing said:

Nope. No gotcha.

Simply saying, it can't stay at 800k / 65k forever. Eventually these amounts will be increased. That increase may be small, to reflect a higher cost of living, or large, as part of a broader policy to clean Thailand out.

So, you agree it's not if, just when.

That leaves the amount, and for what purpose the Thai government will chose that amount.

Which way do you think they will go?

Sure, but of the ones leaving, will it be by choice? 😂

It was a stupid question because I never said or even implied that it would NEVER go up.

Did you miss that?

In fact I put a time limit on my firm prediction -- 5 years though I really think it probably won't go up for at least 10 years or more.

Could it go up tomorrow?

Of course it could.

Again, I never said it couldn't.

This kind of game playing is shall we say TEDIOUS.

About the same as claiming at some point the financial requirements will increase.

Thailand's new deportation laws start today. Who would have thought? 😂 😂

A crackdown on foreigners owning land through a Thai company nominee structure, never going to happen. 😂 😂

Legalizing cannabis in Thailand, impossible. 😂 😂

Nope, no change in Thailand, ever. 😂 😂

I am unaware of any new laws. Please provide an example. 😂 😂

Prior to this regulation, Thailand had no standing procedural framework specifically governing deportation, despite having laws under which such actions were authorised.

Making it easier to deport people that break existing laws.

This issue is this and for some people, nobody knows how many yet, the impact of this change will be very tragic.

Namely that is cases of very minor violations resulting in super quick deportations when the person has lived a very long time in Thailand and has many local assets and/or relationships.

Not enough time to deal with that.

It doesn't take a big iimagination to see how devastating this will be to some individuals.

Another case where Thailand is indeed becoming HARDER on foreigners.

The regulation sets out procedures for deporting two categories of foreign nationals: those whose conduct is deemed to threaten public order, good morals or public wellbeing, and those convicted of specific offences — including illegal entry, illegal employment, illegal business operations, document forgery or crimes carrying prison terms of five years or more.

The longer one is here, the more likely they know the laws.

Sure, there could be a few sad stories about people that have been burned all their here thirty years that have no savings and have no way to meet the financial requirements, but for every one of them, there are likely ten cheaters.

WRONG!!!

In the case of the US they weren't legally allowed to do what Thailand demanded! They could only verify signatures on affadavits.

WRONG!!!

The old rule was 800K three months before only.

There was no other rule BEFORE.

The change was to 800k two months before, 800K three months after and 400K the rest of the year.

The recent ROGUE bank thing has NOTHING to do with immigration rules!

I'm shocked at how you're spreading misinformation.

WRONG!

People were already here on OAs. They were encouraged to get them by embassies abroad.

Look dude you can just admit you're wrong and move on.

Instead you insist on doubling down on your idiotic misinformation.

Do you actually believe the crap you are spewing but feel the need to do it to save face and/or to just be argumentative?!?

Can't imagine why Thais might be rude to you, as per your other post.
