Thailand or Vietnam: Retirement choices

I've been bringing in well over the 65k a month, so that's my fall back to any serious banning of agents here. The banning of agents will not see me HAVE to move.

When Vietnam announces their long stay visa, I am sure it will be reported on this forum, and I'll be having a look at what they offer, because, unlike many, including yourself, I have not imprisoned myself in Thailand. I can leave if /when I want to.

This is the reason why you, and some other members, do not want to discuss the topic, it's because you can't leave anyway. You've gone "all in" on Thailand.

Why do you keep lying and claiming I am imprisoned here? Have to lie incessantly does not strengthen your argument.

Not to worry, I'm sure it won't take long for visa agents to get set up in Vietnam. 😂😂😂😂

What makes you think they can not / will not announce a new retirement visa class in the future? This is true, but at least Vietnam doesn't try to pass itself off as a democracy when it's not, like

Great. Whatever makes my Plan B easier for if I have to / want to move there in the future is good news.

Transfer with Wise.

I pay an agent to do the extension leg work.

OK just that, if you read th VISA forum, IMM gents are very persnickety everywhere as to how that 65K+ per month is reported.

___________

And just to note as I've been looking into it, the common perception (me included) is that IMM established the 800K baht deposit in the bank and that the 65K+ baht per month was set as an alternative.

It may be just the opposite. The 65K baht was set up as a reasonable monthly income a retired person might need to have a decent standard of living in Thailand

The 800K baht was set up as an alternative to those that could not demonstrate a monthly income.

Wise transfer into Bangkok Bank, from Bangkok Bank I transfer into Kasikorn Bank. I keep my daily account separate from my 65k+ account.

Once you properly transfer into Bangkok Bank, for extension purposes, doesn't matter what else you do with.

I clip some of your posts because you are trolling. Simple.

You have invested emotionally and financially in Thailand. This is why you criticize Vietnam so much. You need to positively reinforce your decision, to yourself, and others. It shows in your posts.

Having investments in Thailand does not mean I am imprisoned here and or that I am all in on Thailand.

Why do you keep telling that lie?

And now you are lying and claiming I have criticized Vietnam, I have not.

Okay your life is great, why the lies? 😂😂😂😂

In Thailand retirees live all over the country. Upcountry Thailand these days is comfortable, most towns and cities have decent supermarkets, 7/11s are everywhere, petrol stations offer coffee shops, restaurants, etc. It's comfortable.

In comparison, Upcountry Vietnam is basic. My experience working there for several years is: - Supermarkets are not every where.

Petrol stations offer petrol, no food outlets.

I used to do regularly a 5 hr 200km drive (roads poor) from work place to HCMC and there were only a couple of pee stops; most men peeing at the side of the road, not great if female.

Upcountry Vietnam has yet to reach the level of Upcountry Thailand when I arrived here nearly 40 years ago.

Retirees are going to be limited to the few major towns and Cities in Vietnam. If living in a city like HCMC Hanoi Danang etc is your cup of tea then Vietnam should suit, but living in Thailand allows you to live in a far greater types of places from Bkk to CM Phuket Krabi Kanchanaburi Sakhon Nakhon Tak etc.

Vietnam is a communist state. You will likely be watched. Hosts or homeowners must report overnight visitors through the

VNeID digital identity application or notify the local ward police. Some hotels—especially budget options, local guesthouses, or those in rural areas—may still ask for a marriage certificate or refuse unmarried mixed-gender couples out of caution, tradition, or fear of local police inspections related to anti-prostitution laws. Back in the 90s, staying with a mate working in HCMC, he said his house had been reported to the police and was watched. While I was working there this decade, this is still going on. Retirees need to factor in if you like Big Brother watching you.

Thailand may not be great in every aspect but it wins hands down for me when compared to current Vietnam.

If you are considering Vietnam, go visit a few places to get a feel for the place and if you like it BEFORE moving there. I get the feeling from reading some of the posts that some are posting with no actual experience of Vietnam. It's a fine place for a visit/holiday, I really like District 1 in HCMC, but I'm not sure I'd want to live full time in Vietnam.

They already have agents, so 90 day thingys can be renewed without leaving VN

My information is you still have to cross a border every 90 days, but can live in Vietnam on 90 day back to back tourist visas, or, marry a Vietnamese national for a 5 year visa.

Where does your information come from? Can you post a link?

Your reading comprehension sucks. That's what the agent is for, no need to do border runs. Thought that was common knowledge, like agent use in TH, and you all knowing, should already know that.

So you have researched staying in VN at all. Not much of a plan B.

Unless they cracked down on that 'agent use'. Haven't read anyting of, as simply don't care.

Strange comment.

To my knowledge, a foreigner with a visa can go anywhere and live anywhere in Vietnam they chose, military zones aside. Do you have a link to show foreigners can only live in major cities?

I've cruised through several villages in Issan. No big supermarkets in them. For example, if you live in a village out of Udon, and you want a big supermarket, then you have to go into Udon.

The gap is closing, and rapidly. This is evident with tourism. Thailand down 7%, Vietnam up 15%.

Been there, done that. Even picked my condo block in Danang.

In my opinion, Vietnam is a good Plan B for those who are capable of a visa run every 90 days, and, they are looking at a long stay visa in the near future, which will make Vietnam very attractive as a retirement destination, quite possibly, more attractive than Vietnam to those soon retiring.

Ok, well, without a link, I call BS, even more so from you, because you've never even been there, so how would you know?

What you post is not the current information I have from friends there, and one of them is a visa runner.

I believe you could do that in the past, a long time ago, but not now.

More trolling from a guy who's never even been there.

In any case, crossing a border every 90 days is no problem for me.

Anyway, Vietnam will be announcing a long stay visa soon, so it's a moot point. 🙂

Nothing to read cause it doesn't exist.

Yes, there are visa agents in Vietnam, they are even online, but one still has to cross a border.

In response to your comments

1. "Strange comment".

I'm not sure if you understood my comment correctly. Of course foreigners can go anywhere in Vietnam, the point I was making is that they are unlikely to want to live "upcountry" Vietnam in comparison to the loads of expats living "upcountry" Thailand.

2. "I've cruised through several villages in Issan".

You may have travelled "upcountry" Isaan but have you travelled "upcountry" Vietnam, through little towns and villages? Based on your comments I'm guessing you haven't. It's far more basic in Vietnam compared to Thailand as I mentioned in my comments and I suspect that wouldn't suit lots of retirees.

3. "See it in Thailand also. How many years ago?"

Yes you do see Thai men peeing at the side of the road, but it isn't necessary as there are petrol stations everywhere with decent toilets. That's not the case in Vietnam when I was working there a few years ago - there were few petrol stations upcountry (mainly places with a petrol pump) necessitating peeing at the side of the road. Have done any road trips outside the major cities?

4. "Like the TM30, right?"

Come on, Vietnam watching on expat residences is no where as intrusive or the same as Thailand's 90 day reporting requirement (which can be done online, by post or in imm off taking minutes) is it!

5. "Those days are well and truly gone."

That's not my experience in Vietnam. Also did some goggling and it still happens.

6. "Been there, done that. Even picked my condo block in Danang."

Exactly the point of my earlier post, thank you. Vietnam is fine to live in HCMC, Hanoi Danang and a few other cities, but it's not a great place for expats in "upcountry Vietnam" compared to Thailand's many Nakhon Nowhere options - my experience from working 5 hours away from HCMC in a small town.

Please do not think I'm anti-Vietnam, it's a decent enough place for a holiday/place to work. I have experienced +30 years in Thailand and 3 years working in southern Vietnam (with monthly stays in District 1), and in my opinion, Vietnam currently is not comparable to Thailand as a place to live for expats. Vietnam or Philippines may be a good Plan B for some expats.

Enjoy living in tourist town Danang.
