Canada Escalates Trade War With $20B US Tariffs

Just because the Trump didn't slap import duties on potash means nothing to what Canada can do. Canada can raise the price of Potash for export to the US. The reason Trump didn't include potash, or oil, or gas, or electricity from Canada is because the US NEEDS those commodities. But that doesn't stop Canada hiking the price - or turning off the supply. So far it hasn't done that because it would be a major escalation and a propaganda coup for Trump. Carney is targeting red states and things they need. Makes sense.

Trump skipped tariffs on potash, oil, gas and power because the US buys most of it but Canada needs that market more. Jack prices or cut supply and Canadian producers eat the bigger loss. The US has scale and options. Canada has one dominant customer.

“We won’t escalate because it hands Trump a win” is just “we can’t afford the hit.” Targeting red states isn’t strategy but it is just saying you’re willing to play chicken with the economy that keeps yours afloat.

Carney borrowing more from taxpayers to fund the tantrum isn’t a win either.

Carnage can ofcourse try to "win" with China but that never works.

China is a ruthless buyer and here's few things about that:

Plays suppliers against each other like Canada vs. Russia, Middle East, Australia, its own production

Demands lower prices, long-term contracts on its terms, or equity stakes/control.

Has no loyalty. It will drop Canadian product the moment a better deal appears.

Already sources potash from multiple places and is expanding domestic and alternative supply.

For China Carnage is just a China's useful idiot.

China now sees Canada as an entry point, not just into the US market but in that Global Times propaganda piece yesterday, they noted that Canada is part of the Five Eyes security group… they said that Canada is a FORMER close ally with the U.S. and they say it's quite noteworthy that Canada is rebuffing America, even though it still has this deep access.

So China can't believe their luck.

What else you can expect from this guy.

Mark Carney speaking to Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing: “It’s the first visit of a Canadian Prime Minister to China in nearly a decade. The world has changed much since that last visit. And I believe the progress that we’ve made & the partnership sets us up well for the New World Order”

Oh, and Canadian taxpayers can have a party! The Canadian government is going to borrow $7.5 billion (from taxpayers) to help companies impacted by the 50% US tariff increase.

I predict companies will take the money and run. Many will go bankrupt, or like Stellantis, take the money and use it to move to the USA. Companies will be able to get up to a $5 million, no interest loan. Companies don't have to make payments on for 3 years.

Of course, there's no corruption & kickbacks when this money is allocated...

Great that Canada pivot away from US and trade more with China. The new deals on agriculture will benefit Canada up to $3B and help their farmers. Can’t say the same for the American farmers. Trump’s policy on agriculture is a millstone to American farmers.

DEbt to GDP for Canada is much lower than US. Their bonds are trusted by borrowers. Their budget deficit is better managed. No problem to fund that $7.5 billion.

In this fight, it is about what Canada brings into the fight. They have the people and the world support. Can’t say same for US and for Trump’s failing polls on approval and competency. I am counting the days when he will perform the Taco dance. 💃🏻

Interesting commentary.

Carney walked out of U.S. trade talks at one minute to midnight and called it a war. It isn’t about tariffs. It’s a midterm operation, and Scott Bessent is fighting the war Carney doesn’t want you to notice.

Canada walked out of the talks because Lutnik threw in last minute clauses giving the USA veto power over what countries Canada could trade with.

If somebody told me I could only shop at a supermarket of their choosing, or likewise with any goods or services I wanted to sell, I would tell them to go suck a turd. Wouldn't you?

Good to go together with communist gang of China and Russia. Carnage likes tyrannies I guess (and his investments in Trump's USA).

They have a good record.

Supermarket analogy is pure rage bait. Countries negotiate trade leverage all the time.

If you're Canadian you should be now happy to fork out extra tax money to "flip Trump" and go with China and Russia.'

Anyways Canada has no leverage and maybe this is why Carnage invests in Trump's markets.

In short Canada sells ~75% of its exports to the US and needs that market far more than the US needs Canada. Real leverage is limited to "pain points" the US actually feels: integrated auto supply chains, Canadian oil/gas flowing south, and critical minerals. Everything else is mostly noise.

Let's go find some Commie Canadians to argue with, LOL.

BTW, I have no love for CCP. But if you hadn't noticed, China is light years ahead of the US and the rest of the world in almost everything. And they are only accelerating. You can rightly argue that maybe they stole a lot of the technologies - but then? They improved upon them.

Trump arrived at the party 25 years too late. We all got sucked into globalization - it was always going to be a race to the bottom. Both Republican and Democrat Administrations embraced it for their political donors - big business. The working classes were screwed. But that ship has sailed.

Now it's time to work with everyone. Like it or not.

Allow me to give you some fun facts.

USA "go together" with Communist China trade is $414.7 B while Canada trade is $124.8 B. US trade with Russia is $4.6 B while Canada has a tiny trade of just $28.15 M. By your defination, Trump is bigly for tyranny China and Russia.

Carney's investments in US is long before Trump in office and handle by 3rd party institutions. His investments are placed in a blind trust to comply with the conflict-of-interest rules. Trump has not placed his investments in a traditional blind trust rather his wealth is manage by 3rd party institutions and family members. Why?

Here is bit more fun fact. Trump has investments in Communist Vietnam and in authoritarian countries like Saudi Arabia, Omen, Qatar and UAE.

He is a crook and con-man. Your type of hero.

I am Australian. Our trade with the USA is worth $40 billion, with tariffs attached. The USA has a positive trade balance with Australia.

OTOH, our trade with China is worth $200 billion. No tariffs.

The US vehicle market into Australia is about 2.5% of the total market. Gee, I wonder why that could be?

The story Canadian media should have written five minutes after Carney appointed a U.S. Democrat operative as his PMO COO… but were all afraid of reprisal:

Mark Carney installed Maia Johnson, a longtime American Democratic operative, as the first-ever Chief Operating Officer of the Prime Minister’s Office, a role equivalent to White House Chief of Staff. She also holds the concurrent title of Senior Special Advisor for United States Stakeholder Strategy.

Johnson is a US citizen. She directed scheduling for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, worked at Michael Bloomberg’s Hawkfish, provided strategic consulting to the Biden campaign in 2020, and has deep Bloomberg network ties. As a non-Canadian, she is barred from Top Secret clearance yet she is now Carney’s top deputy with unclear access to sensitive material. There was no official announcement on the PMO website.

Her path to Ottawa runs through the climate-finance web Carney co-chaired (GFANZ with Bloomberg), Gerald Butts (now advising alongside Carney’s wife at Eurasia Group), John Podesta, and recent private gatherings involving Barack Obama, Alex Soros, Huma Abedin, and senior Canadian officials. These are the same networks that have long treated Canada as a friendly base for opposing a Republican White House.

This is not neutral staffing. It is the latest chapter in a pattern of elite US Democratic access and coordination with Canada’s Liberal government, now colliding with collapsing USMCA talks, Carney declaring Canada is “at war” with the U.S., and Trump’s retaliatory 50% tariffs on Canadian autos, trucks, and steel.

Canadian media stayed silent. Five minutes after the appointment, someone should have asked the obvious: Why is an American Democratic campaign veteran running the PMO’s operations and U.S. strategy while trade and security tensions escalate?

The silence itself is the story.

Carnage maybe up to something much more sinister.

Carney left his billionaire jet setting elite life to do what Trudeau couldn't do, break Canada's relationship with the US and strengthen it with the EU. Why? To put Canada into debt and have the International Monetary Fund provided loans.

Then, Canada's vast resource wealth would belong to the global bankers. Him and his friends.

He's succeeding and tariff wars are helping this.

His investments backs this up.

Why the indignation? The US has been meddling in the affairs of other nations since Adam was a pup. Chile and Iran spring to mind.

Most countries want to see the Democrats succeed in the mid-terms, if only to put some brakes on the lunatic in the White House.

Oh no... are you a member of the 'clearing house' anti-globalist conspiracy movement out of Montreal? Gosh, what's his name... It will come to me. Italian-sounding last name.

There should be no horse trading with these Canadians. Get US Cyber Command ready and prepare mechanized divisions for a five-pronged march on the major Canadian cities.

Just take everything.

Why play nice with people like this? They're obviously insane, run by the brother of a coke-addicted mayor. Dancing like cats with Katy Perry.

Put an end to Canada. Take all their natural resources. This nation should never have been created.

America simply cannot be depended upon anymore, they are not a reliable ally, they are not consistent in their policies, and they're being led by a madman composed of diseased puss, off the cliff into oblivion.

Need to add this. That is an extraordinary claim. Carney is no longer saying America objected to specific Canadian regulations. He is telling Quebecers that Americans see the French language and Francophone culture themselves as “irritants.”

Show the demand. Show the negotiating text. Show where Washington asked Canada to surrender French-language rights.

Because without that evidence, this looks less like diplomacy and more like manufacturing a cultural grievance to sell a failed trade negotiation.

By the way, is he drinking from a PLASTIC bottle???

Don't believe anything Trump says. But I would bet some on this site actually believing Trump won another golf trophy and shot a 70. Right there with the pros that practice 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Hey Frank the ball I just hit in the creek, could you toss another ball right onto the side of the green? Thank you, you're such a good and loyal caddy. And I'm such a good golfer, as long as I cheat like usual.

It's becoming increasingly more difficult to argue against the fact that Trump has incredibly destructive instincts and everything he touches turns to crap. He has failed by almost every metric measurable in his second term, with the exception perhaps of stopping the flow of illegal immigrants at the border.

Now he seems to be deliberately sabotaging our very valuable relationship with a close and very trustworthy ally, the truly great nation of Canada. A lot of conservatives will argue that Canada has leaned towards socialist policies and there's no doubt that like America, Canada has gone downhill and is not the nation that he used to be. But it's still a great nation with incredible natural resources that America needs, and due to Mark Carney's brilliance and determination, America will now be deprived of those resources and will have to look for them elsewhere at a higher cost. If that isn't the very definition of self-destruction I'm not sure what is.

America remains Canada’s leading trading partner. Mr. Carney has chosen suffering, but he did what Canadians elected him to do: stand up for Canada. It’s funny to wake up relieved that you’re about to take a beating. We will not go along to get along.

The American president clearly did not know whom he was dealing with. He is following in the grand tradition of American leaders starting wars with people they don’t understand, then wondering what went wrong.

No voter ID and mail in ballots. Democrats are against every possible way to make elections secure. That tells everything what's going on.

RIP USA indeed if democrats get in power.

About the topic itself and "Elbows Up! Carnage".

I would like to know more about Global Transition fund 1 which he benefits from every time Brookfield profits. Especially since he didn't submit 1900 businesses Brookfield owns to the ethics screen, and some of which increase his stock option profits.
