It's a general trend. Gold is now one of the main US exports, despite the low domestic production.

In 2025, U.S. gold exports nearly tripled to $80.6 billion (from $29.7 billion in 2024). In early 2026, gold became America’s #1 export, with $17.88 billion shipped in February alone.Destinations: Switzerland (56%) and UK (24%), both key bullion hubs.

Recent trade data reveals that the 6.2% growth in total American exports for 2025 was not driven by factory goods or agricultural surplus, but by the physical relocation of metal.

As of the first quarter of 2026, gold, silver, and platinum shipments have surged to account for nearly 15% of all U.S. goods exported, a massive jump from the historical average of just 4%.

Why do you think so many people in countries other than the US are buying so much gold?

American gold? Nope.

From the link below:

The metal leaving America is mostly not American gold. It’s foreign gold that was shipped in last year for the trade described above, processed through American vaults, and is now being shipped back out to global buyers.

Newsflash: You can hate the trump administration and what it's doing without hating the US as a whole.

Got it now?thumbsup

In any event, it is not part of the US gold reserve, so what?

Gold had one of if not the biggest runups in history last year.

I really thought this was interesting:

So? It wasn't moved due to the US economy, but due to the US political situation.

I believe it is more to do with the US debt situation and the weaponization of the USD. Countries accumulate excess "money" and they need to park it somewhere. Traditionally, they chose US Treasuries because it was "as good as gold" and paid interest. However, countries now realize that the interest payment does not overcome the "sanctions risk" and the "inflation risk" (the US has a lot more inflation coming). So they are leaning into gold to store reserves.

As for the repatriation, this might very well be in anticipation of another monetary "reset", much like what happened at Bretton Woods. In such a "negotiation" (although Bretton Woods was more dictating than negotiating), gold becomes a serious factor (traditionally).

Not from where I sit, the dollar seems to be plummeting against the Euro

Currently trading at 1.1603. Certainly not plummeting from yesterday.

So pick your time period. A week, a month, a year? What exactly are you talking about and where exactly are you sitting?

And do you think today’s movements in currencies are solely predicated on this article? I mean, there are plenty of reasons to doubt the USD fundamentals, the US debt load and the fact that there is a seemingly delusional individual as the president of the country for starters. Those seem far more meaningful to me than this location move for Dutch gold.

This move is part of a bigger jigsaw puzzle imho. Confidence in USA decision making has to be at an all time low. Picking fights with enemies and allies alike, on a whole range of issues, willingness to use military force, reneging on agreements…all at the same time. It’s not a good look.

So yes, countries will react, not necessarily in a grandiose or confrontational way, but gradually, quietly, they will vote with their feet. This move is just one part of that gradual slow moving tide withdrawing from USA influence.

I’d agree with you that those are factors.

It’s obviously a complex situation with many different facets. I personally start from the position that countries currently cannot predict what the USA might do next. Certainly it has a propensity to pick fights on any subject, anywhere and with anyone. In other words, it can’t be trusted.

With that as a starting point, I would have thought that all countries will be looking at what the USA could do to hurt them, how the USA could do it and then they would go on to work out how they can mitigate that risk.

Whether talking economic, politically, militarily what action could the USA take that would harm the interests of other nations, and what weapons would they use?

Weaponisation of the US dollar is certainly high up the list of a weapon the USA can use. The insanely high US debt level is another warning signal that the US has lost control of its finances.

Withdrawal from NATO in the defence space is a whole other subject.

And so on and so on. It’s not an endless list, but this decoupling from the USA has a lot of facets to it. In the end the USA will get what it wants. There will be a decoupling and then the point will come where the USA simply doesn’t have the same influence as it used to have, simply because countries will no longer be reliant on it.

A multi year project, but that’s where things are seemingly headed. So while Trump messes about renaming this and that in showmanship gestures of, well, nothing, other countries are conducting serious business to protect themselves. Moving gold out of New York is part of that.

Which two other main reserve types held by foreign banks have seen their share decrease since 2025?

Sounds to me more like the Dutch have (or anticipate) a liquidity problem.

From the OP: DNB president Olaf Sleijpen said the move was necessary to “strengthen our resilience and preparedness”. In its statement, the central bank said gold held with the Bank of England is regarded as the world’s most easily tradable, making it more readily available in a crisis than if it remained in the US or Canada.

Definitely, they are trying to buy some manners for their spitting football team, a rag-tag band of bounders that regard rules with the disdain a Dutchman normally has for food that is not deep-fried. It will cost a lot of gold.

Just one of their many problems. Then there's Phillips always lagging behind everyone, maybe they want to buy some cutting edge research for this Johnny come lately of consumer electronics.

There is no perfect President. There are some who always complain anyway, being a hater is a different story.

Got it now 👍

Trust is gone and governments have seen the writing on the wall, and taking physical possession of the gold is the only way to make it okay... same goes for normal people too, as this age of the "paper" gold trading is being exposed for the scam it is, even China has now banned it as there isn't enough gold to cover the claims on each ounce. It's a rush to physically own it and have it. This giant Ponzi scheme western governments have been running for years is going to come undone at some point... hence the actions we see happening now.

For example, the S&P 500 is basically held up and increasing by 7 companies through the AI bubble, and once this Ponzi scheme collaspes, then the brown stuff will hit the fan... as without these 7 companies (like Google, Amazon, Anthropic, ChatGPT, Microsolft, and Facebook etc.) the stock market is just flat. It's becoming dangerous and many are getting worried.

It has all to do with your question. The share of of US debt and USD in foreign bank reserves has decreased since 2025, while the share of gold has increased.

Of course, correlation is not causation, but it's a starting point.

Why do you think that happens?

Another ignorant racist comment. By that do you mean Muslims, who comprise around only 6% of the UK population?

Yes, Michael Burry has been warning of the end of the world for at least 35 years now.

Things are dire. Zuckerberg is selling his Vietnamese hairdresser and downsizing. Even his Hawaiian compound now only has three swimming pools instead of the usual five. Tough times.

Does anyone believe that gold more than tripling since 2020 is related?

How can they just 'move' it? As Americans we have the final say over what happens in our country. You tryna take the gold? Let's see what happens, you Dutchies.😆

Not sure what everyone is worried about. The gold is safely stored in a Brinks Mat facility, under the careful protection of their head of inventory, Auric Goldfinger.

You said: "The share of US debt and USD in foreign bank reserves has decreased since 2025, while the share of gold has increased."

Canada has not increased their gold reserve, nor have any number of other countries. You should try to support your claim.

I noticed that the article you linked to was talking about how gold have tripled, but it was the dollar value that tripled, not the volume. Why do you think they used dollars rather than tonnes?

Incidentally, the 86 tonnes of gold does not come out of the US reserve, and it would only be about 1% if it did,

It is really not that much in the scheme of things, unless you're Canada or some such.

CAD is valued in copper.
