Detroit demands China car ban before Beijing gets through the gate

I thought it had happened here

Most of the car factories closed last year.

Nearly every new car I see is Chinese.

Closer to one out of three, or 30% of new vehicles being sold here are Chinese. Most folks here as usual are buying Toyota and Isuzu and of those are probably pickups.

would point out Toyota and Isuzu are not western car manufacturers.

Having not problems with hating anyone - I'd get the Xiaomi. I have a number of Xiaomi products. They work great!

Agree, Xiaomi rocks and my 'go to' for some electronics.

... air purifiers

... cameras

... drone

... motion sensor floor lights

... power bank

... phones

... water dispenser

All years old, still have, still going, except drone, as I sold that.

Excellent question, but you are way off, there are 0% Chinese parts and 0% American parts and 0% Canadian parts in my American car, as it was produced at the General Motors Rayong Assembly Plant, right here in Thailand.

This car was entirely engineered and developed by GM's South Korean division (formerly known as GM-Daewoo).

To comply with regional tax benefits and ASEAN trade agreements, the parts for Thai-market Chevies were sourced entirely from South Korea or manufactured by local suppliers within Thailand and Southeast Asia

Well i looked it up and yes, there are Chinese built parts in your truck! As a matter of fact you will have a hard time finding any vehicle or electric equipment that does not have any part made or originated as source from China! Chips, resistors, wiring etc.

Yeah, just Googling for any budget car that performed poorly and slamming the whole of China. It's his modus operandi.

Not interested in learning or debate, only in puffing his chest out to proclaim America is the best and China is the worst. Childish. And pathetic. Just don't try and engage with it and it eventually goes away.

It's not just the Neta V.

MG sells in massive volumes due to rock-bottom pricing. However, they consistently rank at the absolute bottom of owner satisfaction and reliability surveys.

BAIC BJ40? The BAIC’s rugged-looking off-roader mimics a Jeep Wrangler but suffers from severe long-term reliability issues.

JAC E-JS1, a A budget electric city car widely exported to developing markets (such as South America). It is panned for incredibly basic safety features, a harsh and unrefined ride, and an interior that feels dangerously brittle compared to slightly more expensive entry-level competitors.

Chinese cars are the worst cars on the roads today.

We love ours, having both the ICE (2 yrs) version & BEV (4 yrs) version of the MG ZS, and best cars I've owned for the price point. Matter fact, best cars I've owned, over all, and that's a lot of car maker: Ford, Chevy, Cadilac, Pontiac, Buick, Chrysler, Dodge, Nisson/Datsun, Mazda, Toyota, Mitzubishi

Wish MG was here in 2002, as the Vios s & Mazda 2 were sub par. Served us well, but reality, crap ride compared to MG ZS, for a few baht more.

Just stating facts.

In the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP)", the first car to EVER get a Zero rating was the Neta V. From China.

https://carbuzz.com/neta-v-achieves-zero-stars-safety/

And many other Chinese EVs are also sub-par.

The Chinese currently make the worst cars on the road.

Please be honest, yes some of the worst but also some of the best!

The Deepal S07 performs exceptionally well in safety tests

Well, that's because it was designed not by a Chinese, but by a German. Changan's design chief is Klaus Zykoria, who as head of design at Volkswagen oversaw all the ID cars now on the road, and the Deepal S07 was designed in Turin. It's basically European design and engineering.

The Deepal S07 has some flaws though. It's slow to charge. The ride can get a little rubbery and turbulent over high-frequency bumps. The infotainment screen is badly done.

You're funny.

I'm just a person with open eyes who takes things as they come. No preconceptions - that's where we're different. I don't need to be told what to think, I can think for myself.

Just because you believe everyone the government tells you to be an enemy, I don't. China is no enemy of mine.

China is no enemy of mine. I love Chongqing. If I could I would move there. Until recently I had a Xiaomi 17 Ultra, love it. My air purifiers are from Xiaomi, my bicycle pump, my drill.

However, when it comes to cars, the Chinese make some shockingly bad cars. That's just the reality of it. Not all, some got good reviews, but some are miserable failures and some of the worst cars made today.

And the good Chinese cars are designed by Europeans. In Europe.

I drive it you dont, so stop pontificating. It charges at home 99.9% of the time. The one time we had to stop and charge we got from 30% to 80 percent using a DC "supercharger" in 40 minutes. . You can set the ride you like depending on the type of driving you are doing. In the mountains sport mode always.

Go drive a Deepal or a Zeekr . One of my wife's best clients just changed from a 4 year old BMW 7 series to the Zeekr and is blown away how much better it is.

Better rivals, even ones with such a big battery, are under 30 minutes 20 to 80. So you'll be standing around too long and paying too much per mile.

Here is another good video on this topic.

Obviously, we all can buy & drive what ever pleases us. Only difference I see & hear, is folks that never drove or owned EV, don't like them, think they're expensive POS, and just a new fad.

Even sadder, some don't like them, simply because they're Chinese companies. WTF ... nuff said

Sorry, owned both, and y'all be very wrong. Would never own an ICEV again, it's that simple. Y'all just don't have a clue.

I liked having and driving my F150, Maxima, Caddy, Firebird. But I like my MG ZS better, has a better ride, and performs better. Even better than the Firebird, both doing 0-100 kph in about 8+ secs, but the Firebird lacks the instant hp & torque when needed.

Do yourselves a favor, go lease one for a week, before buying your next vehicle.

We'll never change an ignorant opinion.

It would be a different story if BYD didn't receive direct subsidies from the Chinese government. Then, US and European manufacturers have about five times the labor costs.

Your assumption of what some may think is wrong from this perspective. It’s about a proven track record is all, some jump on the bandwagon early on and others just stick with a sure proven thing is all. China has a proven track record of shoddy products just as other countries have in the past, give them time to develop decades long quality products just as others countries have, no need to rush it. And perhaps china will develop more of their own technology instead of ripping it off of others, and with that, also leaves a whole other issue of worms. Meanwhile we can sit back and let the guinea pigs to work out the kinks in which time I’ll be long gone by then so don’t really give a hoot.

A Japanese hybrid. Ha ha ha ha ha. And you think that means you have owned an electric car. You truly are more clueless than I thought. No idea at all.

It's all around, and constant, your government always talks of China as if they are the evil enemy. And you believe it.

Donald Trump made all of these comments:

“China is our enemy—and it’s time we started acting like it."

"My only question is, who is our bigger enemy, Jay Powell or Chairman Xi?"

"We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country, and that’s what they’re doing. It’s the greatest theft in the history of the world."

I can't be bothered searching out more. If you really don't think your government rhetoric frames China as an enemy then you are very very blind. More likely just being disingenuous (if I'm giving you credit).

What makes it hilarious is that our previous 2 cars were Hybrids. Toyota Camry and a Nissan X Trail. Camry 6 years, and Nissan 5. Hybrid is nothing like electric. Much more expensive to maintain as you have two engines to deal with the electric on and the petrol one. Changing to an EV was a pretty big deal for us that has worked out better than we could have imagined.

So Hybrids do have an electric engine, good, I thought some people on here were not aware of that...😄

US car manufacturers have never received any government support? Really??

Just now, Cameroni said:

Between 0.6 and 1.5 kWh typically. Hardly an engine. How far could you go on electric power? How fast could you go on it before the petrol engine kicked in and took over?

Every country has a track record of making crap. Since the LFP tech is the standard now, I'm happy to be a guinea pig. Saving 10s of thousand of TBH baht a year, by not buying petrol. Battery is expected to outlast the rest of the car, at least 500k kms, and that's very conserative estimate.

Don't know when I'll ever replace the brakes, as I rarely use them. Ride in a more comfy and better performing car then if it was an ICEV. MG trust their cars so much, they offer lifetime warranties, as do two other makers.

I wouldn't buy another vehicle if it didn't come with a lifetime warranty. ICEV makers tell you your car will last what, 5-8-10 yrs 🤣 nuff said

I don't need a track record to tell me not to buy a vehicle, that runs on a fuel, that degrades every part it touches. Let that sink in.

The more you use an ICEV, the more it's going to cost you.

The more I don't use an ICEV, the more money I save.

Let that one sink in also.
