Whether one is a lefty or righty is purely self interest. If a person is rich, they will embrace capitalism. If one is poor, they will favor socialism. I do find the American obsession with lefties irrational, there are plenty of democratic left-leaning governments that keep getting elected. China seems to have a hybrid of both models.

I do wonder how many Americans appreciate an promise of $5000 for a favorable election outcome is pure socialism.

I have visited Laos and Vietnam, both Communist countries. Compared to Thailand, a purported democracy, the police presence in both was barely visible.

When I was there, there was nobody to be found, 10 days wandering around ZhangJiaJie national park hiking trails on my own. Encountered 1 fat British guy (lost, followed me out) and one lost group of Chinese (too proud to follow me out) at dust and heading the wrong way.
