Rice Department creates “Smart Farmers”

The Rice Department expedites the government’s strategy on development of domestic rice by producing “Smart Farmers”.

Director of the Bureau of Rice Production Extension, Chanpitaya Chimpali (ชาญพิทยา ฉิมพาลี), reveals that “Smart Farmers” are part of a project to train rice farmers. At present, there are about 300 – 400 farmers participated in the project and the department expects that the number of participants will increase to 2,000 – 3,000 by the 2008 fiscal year.

The director says “Smart Farmers” will closely work with communities to pass on knowledge and experiences as well as provide agricultural services to ordinary farmers.

The department and local philosophers also cooperate in arranging a forum to educate farmers and listen to problems of communities. The forum focuses on teaching rice farmers about how to increase their productivity.
