Shenanighans:claims Pattaya Going Up Market And Girlie Bars No Good

I have recently seen one of the of bosses of this "pub" being interviewed on a local tv station.

He was derogatory of what he calls "girlie bars" and he claims they will soon be a thing of the past, what with Pattaya going "up market" etc.

Does anyone else find this offensive?

Here we have an establishment selling alcohol(some would say poison) causing untold health and social problems, who runs down girl bars and yet without such places in Pattaya his business would be nothing.

What do others think?

I didn't see the interview so can't comment on the derogitoriness of it. However, I agree that downtown Pattaya will change (is already changing) and the girlie bars - and boy bars - will disappear from downtown Pattaya to a nice walled Sin City in the boonies. We might get nice spaces in the upcoming 5 star hotels where well dressed beautiful girls and boys will be allowed to sit and pick up customers - like in Singapore. But, of course, that is legal in Sigapore but still illegal here.

I have see the bosses from this place in gogo bars. Enjoying themselves they were.

Pattaya cannot go upmarket. It may get more expensive but will always be a downmarket sextourist haven. AS IT SHOULD BE!!!

Well they did not used to have an ex-owner of the girlie bar's as a manager previously and he was probably hired for his client base as well as other reasons of course :o

You mean in the bar's and disco's of 5* hotels in singapore of course and not hanging around the lobby :o

Its only legal in designated are's such as Geylang too and not the 5* hotels I believe!

Well well Pattay gentrifying - are people forgetting why they first went there?

What has Pattaya got going for it?

Poor beach - dirty beach.

Some decent hotels, but I would think the only return customers are the bachelors.

If there were no girlie bars there would be no Pattaya - it would be back to the place I first visited in the Seventies, or even less.

Shenanigans would be closed - lack of custom.

It could very well close in it's new location for the same reason. Poor business decision by someone who has been lucky with location previously.

Remember in the pub business location is everything.

saw 1408 at the major last night, good movie, and spent an hour across the street at the packed open bar with the lip-synching show before the movie started.shenanigans will have drunks trying to go up and down moving escalators which may be more entertaining than any movie or show.

There are far too many beer bars in Pattaya - sure. But that is no indication of anything but sucess for them.

I think he's right in one sense - many guys coming to Thailand don't really want to be here that's why a place like Shenanigan's exists.

As for Pattaya somehow moving upmarket, I see more and more guesthouse/hotels in the 750-1000 range (and they are all empty).

In the final analysis - if the new place is a sucess than he's partially correct.

As for me - I'm not offended by that guy. Looking at him on the tele looks like he's never eaten rice in his life. Plenty of these types now. Have no respect for the long-stay guys - we are only low brow 'cheap charlies' despite our education and years in the region.

btw: I have been based more-less in Pattaya for about 8 yrs now. NEVER been to his place. I also think the new place will be a total bomb - too much glass. Looks like Sizzler or McDonalds not a pub.

The controlled sleaze of Pattaya is a big part of the attraction for the busloads of Asian countries tourists, they love to gawk at it if nothing else. Like another poster said, what else does Pattaya have? Dirty, ugly beaches, horrific architecture, a transport system run by a violent mafia. I like that there is a better mix of upscale/downscale, cheapos and big spenders, but I don't see any sign whatsoever that the sleaze is going anywhere. Now if Pattaya developed more like Las Vegas (and also a good model as all they had before was a barren desert), with casinos and world class music and shows, that would be a good direction in my view, but consider that Las Vegas is the whoring capital of America.

So no sleaze in Pattaya:

I actually feel sorry for the Indians, Taiwanese, etc... that get lured here on holiday. It's not even the girlie bars - those are easily avoided.

Its the overflowing garbage, filthy ocean, even more filthy girls on Beach Rd, lack of sand, jetski mafia, flooding, bb mafia, totally unhelpful police and especially all the murder lately. I'd love to see some murder stats on the city.

Pattaya can never give up its dark side. When the crack down really hard (immigration, prostitution) - that will be the last straw and there will be an exodus and they will never come back becasue we all know that the govt of Thailand changes their mind on a dialy basis.

Where does that mug think all his 'clients' :o go after tipping ONE at his place?

I don't feel sorry. I have observed them and they seem to be having a good time. Whether they return again I don't know, but that is a rich vein there.

As far as Pattaya's dark side. To me it doesn't feel that much darker than most American cities, and it certainly is a lot safer, so I guess it does really depends where you are coming from.

I meant the families. Especially the Muslim women look totally shocked when they pass by the toothless sluts on the beach.

To tie it all back - it;s really funny... the guys that can afford the 'high end' act like they're royalty. Most likely its just inheritence - or a lifetime in a hovel of an office selling timeshares, automobiles, cleaning supplies or some sordid pyramid scheme. Now, divorced and with 10M baht, they come to Thailand and 'become someone'. Part of that process is insulting people like myself who came to enjoy Asia before Khun Shenanigan could even find it on the map.

No where's my bangers and mash?!

Cheers

several years ago Las Vegas got the great idea to clean up the town and getting the party people out and the families in.

now they have looked at the books and getting rid of the family attractions and getting the high rollers back. without the girls, bars, discos and restaurants this would be a ghost town. if your a family go somewhere else, thailand is a big place and if you dont like pattaya go somewhere you do like

I always wonder if you are taking real Orange Sunshine left over from the 60s or have graduated to DMT which is much stronger than acid or STP which is a heavy three day trip. Whatever you are taking, the hallucinations are most far out! :o

I take my family to Pattaya all the time. Entertainment for everyone. If the place was dead, for example like Rayong, I wouldn't consider going there at all. Boring.

His prices are very upmarket. Now let him get the upmarket customer he wants. Hopfully he invests some of the profit in cleaning beaches and the water. Just because beer is brown, the seawater shouldn't have the same color. But many of the Girls know all the 5* Hotels very well. So maybe his upmarket customers go to the Girlybars too?

I'd say its a bad location - I for see less business in the new location. Not as obvious at the old location - got to think the rent is way more too. Being part of a mall has no character - very sterile surroundings you know.
A bit like those canadian bars on industrial estates with no windows, ,perhaps hes hoping for the cinema goers on the way home ,cant see it myself,
