TAT reports August arrivals at Suvarnabhumi eased ahead just 2.96%, triggering an adjustment in the year-end forecast.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand shows overall international tourist arrivals at Bangkok Airport through August increased from last year in spite of continued drops from some East Asian markets.

TAT reported that tourist arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport from January to August exceeded last year’s figure by 2.96% to reach 6,687,793.

The East Asia market remains on the top of the charts, in spite of a 5.67% drop. Europe and the Americas follow with a slip of 0.62% drop. The biggest increases came Oceania (+21.17%) and the Middle East (+18.20%) followed by Africa (+13.44%), Europe (+12.79%) and South Asia (+12.74%).

Based on nationality, the top three markets are Japan , Korea and China although only Korea reported an increase (+7.40%.) Japan and China put in negative performances of 0.37% and 18.64% respectively, though this was an improvement over last month.

Markets reporting the largest increases over last year were Argentina , Russia , Myanmar , Brazil and Saudi Arabia .

Countries showing a fall were all from East Asia : Vietnam (-35.44%), China (-18.64%) and Singapore (-16.96%).

Two months ago, TAT received Bt296 million from the government to be used for boosting low season travel during the third and fourth quarters.

Eight overseas markets will be targeted with Bt124 million. These consist of the short and middle distance markets of Japan , Korea , Hong Kong , Singapore , UK , Scandinavia , Australia , Middle East , Europe and Oceania .

As for the America , Australia and Europe markets, TAT was given Bt10 million from the Tourism Promotion Fund to conduct additional public relations activities through October.

Roomrates soar as world looks east

Tuesday, 7th August 2007

Source : HotelBenchmark™ Survey by Deloitte

The hotel market in Asia Pacific is seeing much stronger growth this year than last, revPAR across the region is up 14.1% to US$97 – outperforming the 9.4% growth achieved in 2006.

Indonesia wasn’t alone in seeing the fortunes of its island resorts improving; Penang experienced revPAR growth of 18.4%, driven by rising average room rates. Meanwhile further up the coast in Thailand, Phuket is booming. Double-digit rises in both occupancy levels and average room rates have caused revPAR to swell by 39.6% to US$111 – considerably higher than its Indonesian and Malaysian rivals. This is largely due to the increased accessibility of the islands, as low-cost airlines connect these resorts to the region’s gateway cities.

This trend also allows developed resorts such as Phuket to take business tourism away from cities. Bangkok has struggled with this, while the uncertain political situation and the New Year bombings have also discouraged visitors. There have also been problems at Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport with cracks on the runway which have restricted international flights. Occupancy in the Thai capital is down 7.8% compared to last year, curbing revPAR at US$82.

Deloitte's data seems to be from luxury hotels. Average of $111 per night in Phuket would be about 3,800 baht per night.

Sorry to bring this up, but the article states, "This is largely due to the increased accessibility of the islands, as low-cost airlines connect these resorts to the region's gateway cities."

10 million baht for promotions in Oz and US? Farangs spend individually more than that on condos.

10mln bht is on top of 124mln bht - and it's only to be spend in October.

I would say, it's some money and funding of those 'additional public relations' might be repeated more than once a year.

those are usually for activities performed by embassy/consulate or local offices of TIT, with companies. like thai airways, doing their own publicity (often on a larger scale)
