Before I go searching the net for a hotel in Hong Kong I thought I would ask the seasoned travelers here in Thaivisa. I am looking for something near the centre at a reasonable price i.e. cheap but not a hostel. I normally use Asiarooms.com, but get sick of spending hours searching and making a decision.

This is Thai related, kind of. I am in Thailand and flying to Hong Kong.

By "in the centre" are you talking about Central district (business center) on the island or Tsim Sha Tsui (shopping and nightlife district) on the peninsula? You might also want to give an idea of what you consider "reasonable" - ie. a budget.

I've also heard of the Charterhouse but never had the chance to try it out yet.

Stayed at the Prudential Hotel, Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui last year. Located within a shopping centre with direct access to the Jordan metro station so no transport problems.

Reasonable price and booked via Asiarooms.

Take a look at the Salisbury YMCA - actually much more like a 4* hotel than a Y and in an unbeatable location, virtually on the Kowloon waterfront. Right next door to the Peninsula.

The shuttle bus from Kowloon rail station (train from the airport) drops you off just across the road.

Highly recommended. Possibly the best value for money in HKG.

Last year we were in Hong Kong and I found this place:

Star Guest House

21 Cameron Road

Tsim Sha Tsui

Kowloon

www.starguesthouse.com

They also run the Lee Garden Guest House down the street from the Star.

Although we didn't stay at either we looked at the rooms for future reference should we return to HK. They were very nice and although I dont recall the price I am sure they will fall into your "cheap" catogory, at least for HK. Another poster mentioned the Salsbury YMCA. We stayed there several years ago and it's a good choice too, in a great location, but probably in the US $150 per night range.
