After a 4 hour delay on the flight from BKK I get back to the UK, flop into bed and wonder what the country has in store for me besides the increase in booze, the no smoking ban and everything else.

After some well deserved Zzz's I go out for some sea air. As walked down the path from my front door I think I can smell sewage, but my senses are still lagged so I think nothing too much of it especially as it had been raining earlier that day and that could have been the cause. On the way back into the house there was no smell.

A friend called round and said he could smell gas as he came up the path. We walked down and could smell nothing. So we left it at that but I was now aware there might be some sort of problem but my lagged brain still did not react.

Later in the day another friend calls and says the same. He works with gas and was definite about it. So I called the gas board. Sure enough there was a gas leak. Now I have a hole in the path outside the gate, a hole in the road and a hole outside the bay window. Next door have the same as the gas board have had to install new and separate service pipes to both houses. There is mud on the carpet etc too.

Wonderful.

I phoned my son and asked if he had smelled gas on the occasions he checked on the house. Seems he did and for a long time too. Same with the next door neighbour. There must also have been hundreds of people walking past the gate over the last 5 months who must have smelled gas yet no one reported it!!

I dread to think what could have happened. A lighted match casually tossed down, a cigarette dropped.

Then to top it all off, I was brushing my teeth vigorously and caught one of my front teeth with the plastic brush head. My eyes watered a smidgin, I can tell you. I rinsed my mouth and spat out blood. A gentle probe soon discovered the loose tooth. I duly made an appointment with the dentist. She probed and prodded - like dentists do and said it looked bad.

An X-ray shows I have cracked the tooth down the middle right up into the gum line so it cannot be repaired!! Seems it is the worst break you can have :D

Now I have an infection and need the tooth extracting next week and a plastic bridged one inserting. Seems I have to give it a couple of months to heal before she can replace the tooth and as it is a front tooth next to the canine one seems it is a difficult and - of course - expensive job to do as it bends round the gum :D

Ahhh what joy!! Welcome home. :o

I dread to think what the next few weeks have in store.

edit - spotted a typo.

Expensive ?? :o:D Wonder where you come from ??

They have 2 ways to do it, if the root is OK then they can fit a metal pin then add a temp crown, later when it is healed they will fit the correct coloured crown.. total cost is around 10,000, or they will make a bridge... likewise they will fit a temp bridge the day you have your tooth out, and later have the correct bridge, total 23 - 25,000...... that is about 1/3 of the UK price.

[ I have 11 Crowns and 2 bridges done in Thailand] I had 3 crowns done in UK but 2 were so badly done 1x kept falling off, these were replaced here..

I wonder what 'surprises' will be in store for me Prices ??

can hear the fish and chips, pub grub, pints of real ale calling me if you can afford them

Bread to hit £1 a loaf

We found fish and chips for take-away for GBP 6 when it would have been GBP 9 to sit and eat. June 2007 !!!

WOW you can have a superb Buffet Lunch in a 3 or 4 * Hotel for that price Sometimes go to the 'Landmark' 4* 450 baht, just round the corner 'Majestic' 3* 360 baht

25 - 40 baht is the norm here for take-a-way Not 450 baht

Never forget that your low cost paradise where you can be lord of the manor is built on the backs of the peasant classes. If it weren't for the people willing to work for a pittance your 25 - 40 Baht norm wouldn't be there.

If you want bread of terrible quality, as I normally find here in Thailand, I am sure you will find some very cheap bread in UK. However if you pay 1 pound and get good quality bread then that seems fair enough to me.

Good freshly baked bread here appears to be around 60 baht per large loaf........ terrible sliced bread from supermarket here is around 20 baht
