first on the comp at home and now also on the laptop. Instead of smileys, I get pictures displayed that I looked at in the internet before.

Win XP pro, Firefox 2.0.0.7.

Yes, I cleared the cache already, but the problem persists...

In IE try:

Tools>internet options>Advanced>Multimedia>"play animations in webpages". Make sure its ticked. Apply. (not sure for other browsers but imagine similar set up)

If that doesnt work then try recal if you recently downloaded a new programme or update. Sometimes this can cause conflicts. I suggest uninstalling via control panel>"add or remove programmes", then rebooting to see if your smilies are smiling again.

ow i just noticed you have same prob on both a comp and laptop. Hmm. Have you installed a new prog on both machines per chance?
