STALLS AT BANGKOK MARKET DESTROYED

BANGKOK - About 80 men wielding crowbars destroyed a market in Bangkok after vendors refused to vacate land that the property's owners planned to turn into a public park, a police official said yesterday.

The demolition crew wrecked about 150 stalls and dumped five truckloads of sand at the market at the Nak Keela housing estate early on Monday.

Residents had complained about the vendors operating on land set aside for public use. The National Housing Authority ruled on behalf of the estate, which hired a private firm to turn the area into a public park.

Police Colonel Krirkiti Pitaksakorn said it was not clear who was behind the market's demolition. -- AP

Unfortunatly there are examples of this abuse of the poorest people in Thailand everyday. Poor people usualy dont have a legal voice or the education to fight back or protect themselves.
