What's The Advantage Of Installing Microsoft Tcp/ip Version 6?

Featured Replies

I'm running XP SP2 (genuine) with a wireless AP (as a client). Will the installation of TCP/IP version 6 improve "things" or not?

OK I am assuming you are talking about the IPv6 protocol. (instead of a version 6 of the IPv4 protocol stack - if that exisits). The short answer to your question is probably no.

IPv6 was introduced mainly to increase the address space available at layer 3 (there are a numnber of other benefits as well). If your computer has an ip address like 192.168.1.1 then it is using IPv4.

Most networks are still using IPv4.

No. I'm not talking about the IPv6 protocol. Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 is a totally different thing.

Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 is IPv6 protocol. Look on the MS site under install/uninstall. They are referring to them as the same.

Well I'll be buggered! Macrohard "Help & Support" didn't mention any of this. As a matter of fact, I got the impression that IPv6 & TCP/IP version 6 were 2 totally different things.

Thanks Tywais. :o

What's annoying about MS help is that you have to dig into the dark crevices sometimes to find anything. :o

As for your original question, no you won't gain anything and in fact can create problems under some circumstances.

The answer to your question is there is no advantages at all.

IPv6 will at 'some' stage takeover from IPv4 on the Internet - yes it has numerous extensions and improvements to IPv4, however, it is fully backward compatible to v4. v4 for personal use is far simpler and I cannot thing of any reason whatsoever you would set out specifically to install v6 at home.

:o
