Whoisguard

Featured Replies

Hi

Got this notice below from my host. But.... haven't got the slightest clue what they're on about. Guard... what? Can anyone please help me out and explain what this is and whether I need to renew or not?

Thanks

This notice is to inform you that one of your WhoisGuard is expiring

soon. Please act fast and renew the WhoisGuard as soon as possible.

The details of the WhoisGuard are provided below.

WhoisGuard is a way of registering your domain via a proxy, usually your host or registrar so that you don't have your personal details visible when someone does a whois lookup on your domain. Here's an example:

whoisguard-protected-example.gif

Their website is at http://www.whoisguard.com/

I highly suspect - from the lack of English knowledge - this was going to direct him to a phishing site and he probably does not have any such Whoisguard and it was sent to a computer list of emails.

I did finally get round to checking whether the email I recieved was genuine or not. It turned out it was genuine. The question is do I need the "whoisguard", what damage can be done to my biz if I were not to renew the "whoisguard"?

Cheers

It's a privacy thing only. You may get a little spam without it but it's mostly to shield your personal details from the outside world which anyone can get with a whois query.
