Police seize 4 million speed pills in Thai capital

BANGKOK: -- Police seized more than 4 million methamphetamine tablets in a raid on a Bangkok apartment Sunday - one of the largest hauls of the drug in the Thai capital.

Police arrested a 37-year-old man, during the raid in the eastern outskirts of the city, police Lt. Gen. Thani Somboonsap said, describing the suspect as an experienced trafficker.

The raid was planned after a security guard at the apartment building tipped off police about the suspect's "suspicious behavior,'' Thani said. Police seized 4.38 million methamphetamine tablets from the flat, he said.

It was among the largest seizures of methamphetamine in Bangkok, police told reporters. Thailand considers the trafficking and consumption of methamphetamine to be such a big problem that it constitutes a threat to national security. The drug mainly comes from Myanmar.

According to Thani, the suspect said he was paid 20,000 baht (US$488) by an ethnic Chinese businessman in the northern province of Chiang Rai to bring the drugs to the apartment. Chiang Rai is on the border with Myanmar.

In October last year, Thai authorities made another huge haul, collecting 8.4 million methamphetamine tablets discovered in sacks abandoned by a riverbank in northern Thailand, near the Myanmar border.
