Hi,

I am trying to explain to my Thai wife that even without meeting me her country hates me and will do everything in it's power to discourage me from retiring there even if I have a Thai wife and Thai children. I will never have a pension of the quoted 65,000 a month but I will at some stage have a house in Thailand and 5-10 million in the bank. Can anyone tell me if that cuts all the corners and would be sufficient to renew my visa each year with the minimum of hassles. We will set up a small business for my wife so some money will come in and I will recieve and at some stage would have a pension of over 50,000 and as I am quite happy to live up country I don't think money should be an issue. I'm 48 and would like to retire there in 8-10 years and I know it could be all change by then but if I retired there now what would be my situation. My plan is to move to Thailand and live my years out there and don't like the thought of going through all that stress when I'm old or infirm, when I move to Thailand I would be burning many bridges so I would not do it lightly.

I don't know why you would tell your wife any such thing - it is not true and you don't seem to be aware of the requirements.

1. At any age you can live in Thailand on one year extensions of stay if you, your wife, or combined income is 40k baht per month.

2. At age 50 or over you can live in Thailand on retirement extensions of stay with 65k monthly income, 800k in a Thai bank account for 3 months or a combination.

Why would you tell her that in this thread that you started you were told how easy it is. Admitedly your dreams and aspiratons are fluid to say the least!

Hi all,

In May I will marry my beautiful Thai girlfriend. can I live in

Thailand ? I have thought about renting a restaurant and

letting her run it while I relax for the rest of my life. I will

not have a large ammount of funds but I will spend maybe

1 million baht on the restaurant would I make enough to

have a lazy life. I will inherit 10 odd million at some stage

in the future so I am not putting all my eggs in 1 basket.

I know you have to have some money coming in.

Dave

troll come out, you're surrounded!

:o:D

Two days later posts another topic with conflicting information - troll and returned to his bridge.

interesting thread...

I was married in May and things do change. It has always been our intention to move to Thailand at sometime. I was naive enough to think of going through the buying a bar or restaurant way but I realize from what my wife and other forum members have said that would be a pipe dream. My wife now started a good job and I have a well paid job and even when we bring her son over in about 3 years we can still save well over 10,000 pounds a year I will at sometime inherit at least 150,000 pounds so although not rich I will be confortable. The real question I was trying to ask was if I was able to move there now and I was over 50 how does the 800,000 in the bank work do you have to spend all that sum each year or do you have to spend a proportion because there is a big gap between having 65,000 a month proven income and having a sum of 800,000 which you could use year after year as the basis of your renewal while living off other funds. I'm sorry if anyone thinks I'm a time waster because I certainly am not, I've asked questions on many different subjects because I want as clear a picture of the situation as I can. The "your country hates me" line was meant as a bit tongue in cheek but is minefield out there for anyone who wants to permanently move to Thailand.

Financially you don't have a problem...I must admit that I'm spending 100K-150K each month, but we both play a load of golf and holiday a lot..we also eat out a lot but frequently only pay 100-110 baht each time! So living expenses can be very low.

Put as much money as you can off shore..I'm getting 6.4% instant access (no tax) in the IOM.

I think Thailand is a wonderful place to retire and am really enjoying it..have been here nine months now and am really relaxed. You just have to go with the flow and accept things that you wouldn't normally at home.

Visa no problem if you meet the criteria...which you can.

Forget about a job for you...

Maybe your biggest problem is..what are you going to do here..you will need a hobby, play golf or something. Its not that easy to potter about in the garden etc etc..well not for a lot of the year..its too hot.

If you really want a breakdown of costs PM me. You will be surprised how cheap you can live...and then add the luxuries
