Has any one got any accurate imformation on the number of Thais living in the UK and Brits Living in Thailand

Most countries in the world have official (government) web pages where all those stats can be found.

Yes, but the UK doesn't seem to give very detailed breakdowns. For example, the 2001 census results (from https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/Default.asp) give the following results for country of birth (the columns are England and Wales respectively):

ALL PEOPLE : All people - All people: 49,138,831 2,903,085

Asia - Other Far East : All people - All people: 113,521 2,574

Asia - Other Far East : All people - 0 to 15: 8,946 312

Asia - Other Far East : Males - Total: 40,360 833

Asia - Other Far East : Males - 0 to 15: 4,564 184

Asia - Other Far East : Males - 16 to 64: 32,916 594

Asia - Other Far East : Males - 65 and over: 2,880 55

Asia - Other Far East : Females - Total: 73,161 1,741

Asia - Other Far East : Females - 0 to 15: 4,382 128

Asia - Other Far East : Females - 16 to 59: 62,018 1,501

Asia - Other Far East : Females - 60 and over: 6,761 112

'Other Far East' excludes China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. It's difficult to get more out of the figures - it looks like 40,000 primary Thai ladies and Filipinas, but there are dependent children and couples to assign ourt of these figures. The estimate of Filipinos in the UK in 1995 by the Commmission for Filipino Migrant Workers is about 65,000 to 90,000 in the UK as a whole, with 65% female. (I don't know if this includes children born in the UK!) These numbers seem rather low - based on observation I would guestimate the adult female Thai population of England as around 0.1% of total population, which would give 50,000. Of course, numbers have been rising since 2001.

One largish group included under 'Other Far East' is the Vietnamese - 12,000 (or is it 16,500?) boat people came to the UK. I don't know whether that is a 50-50 mix of men and women.

There is of course another complication - what about dual nationals? How will the UK government know how many UK citizens in the UK have Thai nationality? (It's something to be quiet about, as it seems that it will debar you from some jobs.) Indeed, what statistics does the UK government have on the nationality of UK residents? Does it monitor and integrate airline passenger manifests?

Very true, the census shows 49 million people yet we are told recently that the UK population had just reached 70 billion!

I was going to say the UK govenment hasn't a clue how many immigrants are in the UK why should they know how many Brits are in Thailand, but ChiangMai almost intimated that. :D

My "official" figures are probably more accurate than the Governments.

My Mrs lives here, she has about 6 close Thai friends and about 10 aquaintences. So by my calculations there are exactly 1,123,467 Thai's living in the UK. However, at the time of my counting, some Thai's were on holiday so this figure could be nearer to 6,465,249 :o:D

I think you forgot to include Nok who now lives in Wandsworth and Am who moved to live in York thus you should increase your headcount by 2.

Sincere apologies for that chiang mai and Nok and Am of course. My sources told me that Nok and Am couldn't be bothered to take the stupid "Life In The UK" test and so went back to Udon Thani and Korat, respectively. So they must have done the test then. :D

As others have said, this is a difficult question. Jessica Mai Sims of the Runnymede Trust has just completed a small study of Thais in the UK ("Thai-British Families: Towards a Deeper Understanding of Mixedness" in her edited volume Mixed Heritage: Identity, Policy and Practice, Chichester: Runnymede Trust, 2007, ISBN-10 0-9548389-6-3), and provides some background statistics. The last census showed 16,256 people born in Thailand living in England and Wales (though this must be a significant under-estimate for those resident in the UK as a whole). About a third in the Thais recorded in the census lived in London. In 2003-05 64% of those allowed to settle were wives, while only 3% were husbands, giving a clue to the gender imbalance in the UK Thai population. The report is an interesting read.

YangYaiEric, completely off topic but I've just watched your avatar 10 times and still don't know what's going on. What are the hyenas doing and what did the Lion catch?!

OK. Thanks for asking Carl! The group of Hyenas are scaveging a left-over animal carcus that originally fell prey to the lion. The lion, having eaten its fill, temporarily wanders off, returning to find the hyenas invading his prize catch. So, said lion gets a bit upset (and quite rightly so IMO), and lays into one of the hyenas, with devasting consequence for the hyena!

Does that make any sense to you ? :D Anyway, glad you asked !

Cheers!
