Lots of people have been asking about Vientiane for tourist visas lately, and I was just granted my 3rd, no problems at all. This is my 3rd TV in a row, but first from Laos, no red warning stamps, no problem.

I asked for, and was granted, a double-entry tourist visa (2000 :o, though the clerks seemed to want to talk me out of if and left me completely confused about this visa (ie. expiration, extensions, etc.), so if anyone can explain this in detail, or link me to a good explanation, that'd be great.

Applications from 8:30-11 AM (or was it noon?) and pick up the next day between 1 PM and 3 PM.

The expiration date of the visa is stamped on the visa, something like “…must be utilized before…”

Don’t ask an embassy or consulate about extensions. It is not their business to be able to give information about it, as it is a matter that immigration offices deal with.

The maximum extension you can get after entering Thaiand on a tourist visa is 30 days. How long you effectively get depends on the immigration office where you apply. Some give longer than 7 days only if you can show a ticket out of Thailand farther into the future than 7 days.

Thanks Maestro! (Great name, BTW) So it sounds like I can use each entry just like a regular single entry TV and apply for a 30-day extension after 60 days each time? I guess what I don't understand is in between the 2 entries. I think I can just do a border run and come right back, but can I stay longer? After using the 1st entry, when does the 2nd entry expire?

And for the record/benefit of others who might care - I didn't ask them to explain it - just asked for a double-entry when submitting the application, then had to ask for it again at the next counter when I paid for it. They really did try to talk me out of it both times. Don't know why.

You must make your entry before your visa expires. So if it is issued with a six month validity you probably don't have to worry much - but if it is only three months you need to make the second entry during the three months from date of issue (before the visa expires).

And don't get confused like some people do. You need to make your second entry before the visa expires, not by the date that the stamp says you can remain. As an example, your visa may expire on Jan 1, and your stamp from your last entry may let you stay in the country until Jan 3. If you stay until Jan 3, then try to use the second entry, your visa would have expired. You need to get out and back in before the visa expires, Jan 1 in the example.

Thanks - I think I finally understand. So I have to make BOTH entries before the "enter before" date.
