i viewed a "panel discussion tv show" on web 2.0 this am

by my understanding this forum fits the web 2.0 definition .. interaction of the group to form content. as opposed to one author creating the content.

I came away with a better, but still way murky, understanding of web 2.0

as i understand, web 2.0 is blogs & wikis & communities / forums .. embedded into the traditional htm based internet.

was surprised to find that "wiki" has become a common usage web 2.0 word much as "google" became a word .. & that there are wiki apps much like there are forum / bb apps.

there are often questions posed here regarding web creation software .. or photo editing software.

what are the preferred forum or bb packages?

my web host offers phpBB™ & SMF

http://www.phpbb.com/ & http://www.simplemachines.org/

i want to create a non-travel / non thailand forum.

proper layout & ease of use are necessary to create a user friendly environment.

pointers / thoughts / issues?

ease of adding google ad sense to the forum page is a primary consideration.

I know that if the "look / feel" of a forum is not friendly I do not like the forum.

there are thai forums with excellent content but poor moderation or layout that i avoid.

i do not like most technology forums (thus I post a technology question here) ..

.. but then I like well presented food & pretty BGs as well!

"What is history but a fable agreed upon?" ~ Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) .. perhaps the first reference to web 2.0

SMF (Simple Machines) has better features for admins, and a better security track record. Invision (like what Thaivisa uses) is also very good but overpriced. I used phpBB, and Invision for sites but after switching to SMF would never go back.

thanks ...

going to 'think' about sub forums for a couple days & get a forum up ..

IMHO, moderating is critical ..

:o how many posts before something illegal or amoral is posted :D

:D the first poster p!$ off :D

on a public forum what is liability for the forum owner?

& the .img tag avatars using the bandwidth from another site..

could / will open me up to potential BS

oh well ..

SMF crashed my 'shared hosting account' during setup (just setting up smf forum crashed my hosting account) .. cpu overload .. & this was discussed on the smf forum.. my crash was not unique, others reported same same .. cpu overload without a single post.

seems to be an issue with 1.1.4

Did you set it up manually, or from the account's control panel?

the smf 1.1.3 set up beautifully with the click of a button.

strong recommendations were to upgrade to 1.1.4 ..

the upgrade required coping & writing over 1.1.3 files w/ 1.1.4 files in the (new) 'forum' directory on my host's server

the upgrade appeared to work fine ..

smf 1.1.4 was there all pretty & shiney..

the problem arose when I started setting up the forums 'boards' .. the board setup hard locked .. & after shutting down FF .. restart FF & my home page(on my shared host's server)eturned a 'site suspended cpu overload message'

.. which I assume everyone clinking on a link to my site got.. for several minutes.

& the smf forum has several posts reporting simular problems after the upgrade .. several dudes had working forums in place & are currently out of biz, or were as of last night

the smf forum recommendation was to change web hosts or get a dedicated server...

I will probably go with a forum host (separate from my web host) that offers telephone support (ie: hand holding!)

if the google ads work at all, 2-3 clicks per day, I'll break even on the new forum host.

or, for the price of a sandwich BF I can get hand holding & bag wan for a year!

Think I'll hang on to 1.1.2 for a while.

For $40 you can get live SMF support.

If you want to do hosting and forum combined, Invision will do the two, including support and setup, along with the licence fee all for a fairly reasonable price.

thanks for your support Mr. cdnvic.

the invision plans do not offer enough bandwidth for my web sites. but their forum only package would probably work.

I'm over 2 gig per day M-T-W (on good weeks.)

I got linked to by a major player during the summer & got 5k visits from that 1 link alone in a few hours.

the visits & bandwidth of the real successful sites (like tvisa!) must be staggering...!!!!

do you have adsense placement on your smf 1.1.2 forum?

1.1.3 is apparently stable ...& was a simple install, it was almost as easy as finding a friendly lady (boy) in the nana parking lot at 2am!

thanks again!

Forum software, like Invision, really sucks regarding bandwidth and CPU processor. You need a good hosting plan with a lot of power, or a semi-dedicated or dedicated server.

When Thaivisa was in its real grow age, we did 30 GB per day in bandwidth, and we was banned at every webhosting company we tried. Reason: Too much traffic and resources.

Today we are using much more energy and we own our two mirrored servers in Singapore and have another mirror in the US.

For the Linux freak, we look like this in peak time:

Last login: Wed Nov 14 12:42:07 2007 from 203.212.xxx.yyy

[tvforum ~]$ top

Cpu(s): 8.6% us, 2.1% sy, 0.0% ni, 80.6% id, 8.4% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.3% si

Actually, the forum area is my one ad-free zone (it deals with reviews so I want to avoid conflicts), but I know several webmasters who do have adsense on their SMF forums, which I'll forward by PM.
