I have bought myself a new MP3 player, I used to connect to the old one through the USB port with 'sudo mount /media/MP3'. The line in fstab is '/dev/sdb1 /media/MP3 vfat iocharset=utf8,umask=000 0 0' and it worked perfectly.

I bought the new MP3 and with the same setup all I can get is ' mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist'.

I connected it to a Windows system and I can see all the folders, transfer data and everything looks OK, it works exactly as it should.

Any ideas how to get it to work in Linux??

Have you tried /dev/sdb2? Really, though, you might not need anything in your /etc/fstab. I am able to mount my iPod using Amarok, and there isn't an entry in my file system table for such. It just works. Unfortunately, though, on my system (Ubuntu), Music Player "grabs" onto the iPod as well. I have to shut down Music Player before relying on Amarok.

I fixed it, my Swedish mate suggested I try 'Removable Devices and Media', I set 'Mount Removable Devices when hotplugged' and away it went....all OK now!!

In Fedora 8 I use a package called automnt (or something similar) which automatic mounts volumes attached to the computer. Works great, even my LG KG300 mobile phone is seen as a Mass Storage Device and is mounted a removable drives (main Phone memory drive1 and memory card as drive2)

anybody know if there's a programme for a sony HDmp3 player?

Now I am running Linux [ubuntu] it needs sonic stage to add remove

files[albums].

It still works fine but it would be nice to change some of the music

cheers.

Whatever you connect to your computer, if there is any problem just type:

# dmesg

It will display what's going on.

As a side note, typing

dmesg | tail

will result in just the last dozen or so system messages being displayed. This of course assumes you have booted your computer, entered your desktop enviroment, and then plugged in your mp3 player.

I'd recommend using Amarok, although I can't say with certainty it will work with that brand of mp3 player. Someone else mentioned Ubuntu's Music Player grabbing their Ipod, so you might want to shut that down before trying Amarok.

Rythmbox that comes with ubuntu has an ipod function so does amorak

and a couple of programs just for the ipod.

Nothing for sonic stage[ that has just been ditched by sony by the way]

I have just got a new PC with a 22" samsung screen, Acer a couple

of GBs ram etc etc.

So i have 2 PCs running with one screen, mouse and keyboard

its great, couple off taps on the keyboard jump from one to the

other.

I will try to keep the new vista machine as pristine as possible only

downloaded realplayer,ad-aware,sonicstage so far.

will use the ubuntu machine for e-mail and web surfing so i can click

on any link and not give a damm about virus and all the other nasty stuff.

Got sonic stage connected to the player and its working fine, only the normal

things to piss me off, took a bit of messing around only had to close the programm

4 times before i got it figured now its loaded up with 30gbs of new music all ready

for my trip to los and cambodia in the new year.

so i dont have to buy a new player which is great cos this sony works great and

has a great sound.
