Where to go on new years eve

Two wayward expats (a pearl farmer and an engineer) from neighbouring Burma are required to stay in Bangkok for several days work 30th Dec- 4th Jan.

Can local expats kindly provide their ideas on good nightlife over the holiday period - especially where to go on New Years Eve.

Honestly the last thing we need is to be sitting in a Nana or Patpong bar as the clock strikes twelve on the 31st, besides which no advice is needed as to the whereabouts of a girlie bar.

What we would like is:

1.  a good pub

2.  a good restaurant

3.  a good nightclub or special function

4.  place to meet and greet some other local expats, have a chat etc.  

Burma's expat scene is understandably far removed from her neighbours!!

If possible please give brief description on your favourite haunt and yr suggestions.
