Sexy dancers at Thai political rally draw rebuke

Scantily clad dancers were hired to spice up a political rally in Thailand ahead of this weekend's general election, drawing a censure from Election Commissioners on Wednesday.

The rally in Ratchaburi province, 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of the capital, Bangkok, was organized by a provincial branch of the Election Commission on Tuesday evening.

Local candidates from all political parties were invited to speak, with entertainment in between.

Five dancers dressed in bikini tops, hot pants and stilettos gyrated on the stage, as loud music blared.

The event came five days before Sunday's general election, which will return the country to democratic rule following a September 2006 military coup that ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

"We wanted something exciting to draw people to the event,'' said Chavalit Bunyeun, head of the commission's provincial office, which organized the event.

He noted that the plan didn't really work: "Even though we had dancing girls, there were less than 100 people who came to hear the candidates.''

Election laws prohibit political parties from offering entertainment at rallies, but Chavalit said he didn't think the law applied to events organized by the Election Commission itself.

The body's central office in Bangkok said it was shocked by the event and had opened an investigation.

"We are seeking an explanation from our local office and have asked them to provide us with the reasons such a performance was permitted,'' said Sodsri Sathayatham, one of Thailand's five election commissioners.

The Democrat Party, which was the opposition group while Thaksin was in power, boycotted the event and held its own rally about 200 meters (feet) away.

Scantily clad dancers are hired as entertainment at a variety of mainstream venues in Thailand, including shopping malls, auto shows and at outdoor festivals.

A troupe even entertained soldiers manning their tanks in Bangkok on a September afternoon after the military staged the coup.

Someone hasn't quite got the hang of metric/Imperial conversions.

200 metres = 656 ft 2 1/64 inches

200 feet = 60.960 metres

Or has Thailand switched to the water meter as a unit of measurement?

Agreed - they won two out of two, which makes it harder to see why they felt that they had to rig the third, later anulled, election. :D

Thanks Clayton for the input.

Many words like dancers, thailand, exciting and bikinis serve to drive the TV google search (and thus the search for their next desperate $, however they do it) even higher :D

those dancers are rather ugly than sexy - and hardly miss thailand level (where girls wear half of that on the pictures).

as to boosting election rallies and voting - allow 50% parity for female candidates on the lists to draw female electorate

Well, a beautiful Christmas morning.. what else to do but have a good whine? :o

nor the first time TRT/PPP have failed to draw a crowd, I guess. biggrin.gif

Agreed - they won two out of two, which makes it harder to see why they felt that they had to rig the third, later anulled, election. cool.gif

OT, but need to respond to make corrections: I wish people would check the facts before posting, things that really aren't disputed and the records are there for everyone to check.

TRT were punished for trying to get other parties to contest elections after the Democrat party BOYCOTTED the elections, thus causing a stalemate. TRT then tried to get others to run so that a result could be obtained in a handful of Southern districts. The Democrat party was charged with derailing the elections also, but, as this didn't suite their military masters, they were acquitted in the show-trial that served to ban TRT.

Many in Thailand feel TRT acted in good faith on this, which is why PPP is now again the biggest party.

The facts being that the 3 posts referred to were made a week ago, not on Christmas morning, but as you say, it is a beautiful peaceful Christmas morning, so Merry Christmas one-and-all. :o

Or has Thailand switched to the water meter as a unit of measurement?

Maybe they were not sure how strong a tele-lens the Democrat's had on their camera to steal the show to their screen.

Anyway the Loy Krathong shows looked a lot better than this one.

Who knows, maybe all the parties tried to put their effort together and collect some money to give to orphans and other unlucky kids at Christmas..

And peace on earth..

or

[All Thai] laws prohibit political parties from offering [incitements, incentives and/or bribes], but [enter politicians name here] said he didn't think the law applied to [enter name of politician and/or government entity here].

And that, IMHO, sums up the whole enchilada, past, present and future.
