I'm pretty anti all this i-pod/i-tunes/i-phone - perhaps mostly cos I'm a PC man, but also.. <deleted>? i-this, i-that... have they run out of names?

But me dad got himself one for christmas. and i have to say it's pretty darn cool.

Still... there's an LG alternative coming out that may be more to the liking of a PC man.

The serial number (for the US models) lets you know if you can unlock it or not, but judging from yours (a 33) it sounds like it might be a UK model? Or did you buy in Thailand?

If you're talking about the Viewty, it's already been out for a bit now. I have one.

Pros: 5mp digital camera, 30fps VGA video (good enough for TV), 120fps QVGA (great for slow motion playback). Form factor is slightly better than iPhone.

Cons: The phone software sucks, and no wifi.

Nevertheless, I like this phone. But when iPhone goes to 5mp camera, I might have to consider switching.

that may well be the one I was thinking of yeah. :o Saw an ad for it, and liked the look.

Might it be worth waiting a bit longer for a better option, perhaps?

LG is heavily promoting the Viewty (KU990) product. I'm sure it's only going to get better - but if you're waiting for better software, that's some ways off, it is not nearly as polished as what's available on the iPhone, or even any Nokia or Sony Ericsson phone for that matter.

Having said that - it still does everything I really need or want, except for wifi. If the camera is the important thing for you, I'd say get it now, rather than the bulky N95 (which is what I traded in) or the Sony Ericsson K850i (which is what I really wanted, but I'm seeing lots of complaints). And if you're coming back - buy it in Bangkok, much cheaper. Or wait for me to get another site up then you can buy from me :D

If the camera is not the most important thing, get the iPhone unless it's too big for you.

If you actually want to take good pictures, don't get a phone with a camera. Get a camera. It doesn't matter if these phones take 500 million pixels, the picture will still be horrible compared to a low-budget 2 megapixel digicam.

About the only thing going for these on-phone cameras is that they're on the phone, so you usually have it with you. Other than that, they're not to be confused with dedicated digicams in terms of capability or quality, and really should not be a deciding factor in a phone purchase.

I beg to differ. It's true that the megapixels don't matter much, but there are phones with better and worse optics. Better is better. I use the phone cam a lot simply b/c I have it with me - and it would be nice to have better quality. For me, it's one factor in making a phone purchasing decision.

HDRIDER, too bad it's sold, I wanted it, the wife wants one and it would save me from having to get her a new iPod as well. Two birds with one stone so to say.

To some extent, I agree - however, there is no way a 2mp digicam can stand up to a 5mp phone cam. I have a Sony Cybershot (yeah, the tiny one) and it takes great pictures - but it still doesn't compare to the one on the phone.

The whole point is to have everything in one unit - and for me that is most definitely a deciding factor. If I'm planning to take good photos, though, then I might consider having a normal digicam with me. The biggest weakness of phone cameras is low light situations - in normal light they're excellent.

I forgot to mention that the Viewty is also the first phone camera where you actually have control of the ISO setting, up to 800. Not a huge improvement, but it's nice to have.

Pretty much anything can take a good pic in good light. Thing is, good light is usually not available.

And yes, I already pointed out that the main thing going for a in-phone camera is that it's with you.

But... what do you throw away? You throw away image quality. Optical zoom. Optics. Resolution (and I'm not talking about megapixels). A decent flash. Manual settings. Scene settings. ISO settings/performance. Etc. etc. etc.

Yes, it works, and in a pinch, it's "good enough". But my point was that if you're concerned about image quality, get a real digicam. They're small enough these days to carry around in your pocket.

Comparing oranges to oranges, I would prefer a 5mp digicam over a 5mp phone cam. But that is only because of optical zoom, and possibly performance/speed.

All the other things you mentioned are available (N95 uses Carl Zeiss optics, for example), the Viewty and Sony K850i have xenon flash which is plenty good, manual settings, scene settings, and ISO in the case of the Viewty.

As for resolution, I am not quite sure what you are getting at, since it is normally measured in megapixels.

Ultimately, as we both agree, I don't have to think about whether I need to take my camera with me or not. If the situation is important enough, I'll think about the extra camera.
