New Cabinet Appointed

Well, he's in government employ now... along with his co-hort, the police-assaulting mayor, too...

Wan survives the cut

The Cabinet shrugged off public distaste on Wednesday and appointed controversial Wan Yubamrung and Chonsawat Asavahame as Assistants to cabinet ministers. The duo survived a debate, during which even PM Samak agreed, that their appointments were of dubious taste. But the full cabinet met and approved the entire list of Secretaries and Advisers to cabinet ministers, and ex-nightclub brawler Wan, along with Chonsawat, who is currently on trial for assault and battery on a policeman, made the cut. PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair announced the list without fanfare. Wan, son of Interior Minister Chalerm, is to be Secretary to Deputy Public Health Minister Chawarat Charnveerakul as expected. Chonsawat, son of Puea Pandin Party Chief and Samut Prakan province political powerhouse Vatana, will serve as Secretary to Deputy Interior Minister Sithichai Kohsurat. Wan, who changed his name from Wanchalerm, was involved in a brawl at a Bangkok nightclub in 2001. He was convicted of assault in 2004 and banned from entering entertainment venues for two years. His brother Duang was accused of shooting a policeman to death in a nightclub brawl during the same period, but was acquitted after witnesses told the court they didn't see anything.

Seems these mass e-mailed photos of Wan and Duang and Chalerm and Pojaman and Thaksin and Panthongthae were well-timed.

In keeping with the new government's apparent policy of only hiring those with criminal backgrounds...

Wichianchot appointed Government Spokesman

The Cabinet Wednesday resolved to appoint Wichianchot Sukchotrat as the Government Spokesman, and Suparat Nakbunnam and Natthawut Saikua as his Deputies.

They all failed to get elected in the December general elections.

The newly appointed spokesman, who is close to former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, was former Deputy Permanent Secretary for Justice and former spokesman for the National Counter Corruption Commission.

PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair, acting as Government Spokesman, told a press conference at Government House about the appointments.

Actually, Wichianchot was an actual commissioner on the NCCC, in addition to his other role as their spokesman. He's also a Police Major-General, but during his tenure at the NCCC, Wichianchot, who, almost comically, holds a PhD in criminology, had this occur...

HISTORIC RULING: Graft-busters guilty of abuse of authority

Entire NCCC panel gets suspended jail sentences; concern soars for already fragile checks-and-balances system

Thailand’s already shaky checks-and-balances system was thrown into turmoil yesterday when the Supreme Court’s political division found all nine anti-corruption commissioners guilty of abusing their power for awarding themselves a pay rise.

The court gave each of the nine members of the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) a two-year suspended jail term, a verdict that put them under immediate pressure to resign en masse.

The nine commissioners are Vudhichai Srirattanavudhi (chairman), Chitichai Pinichapat, Wichianchot Sukchotrat, Wichian Wiriyaprasit, Wisuth Pothitaen, Yongyouth Kapilakanchana, Pradit Songroegs, Chao Attamana, and Pinit Arayasiri.

That resignation eventually came days later...

NCCC: End of the road for graft-busters

Resignations of eight remaining members cheered

The eight remaining disgraced members of the country’s top graft-fighting agency resigned yesterday amid mounting pressure for them to step down.

The National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) members’ decision to resign came after the Supreme Court last week found them guilty of abuse of power for awarding themselves pay rises.

The decision was reached at a meeting yesterday morning of the remaining NCCC members, said Wichianchot Sukchotrat, a fellow graft-buster and the group’s spokesman.

All eight graft-busters have signed their resignation letters, Wichianchot said.

Wan, Chonsawat among government appointees

A close aide to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is set to be appointed as new government spokesman

Wichianchot Sukchotrat, a failed People Power Party candidate who was fielded in Bankgok in the December election, will be the head government spokesman, with Suparat Nakbunnam and Natthawut Saikua as his deputies.

Wichianchot is close to former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. He was previously deputy permanent-secretary for Justice and spokesman for the National Counter Corruption Commission.

A source said Thaksin's influence within the ruling party played a key role in Wichianchot's appointment.

The appointments were announced at a press conference at Government House by PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair, who has acted as government spokesman to date.

Jakrapob said Cabinet also appointed Wan Yoobamrung, son of Interior Minister Chalerm, as secretary to the deputy public health minister, and Chonsawat Asavahame, son of Puea Pandin Party chief adviser Vatana, as secretary to the deputy interior minister.

Among the high-profile appointees was Chai Chidchob, father of banned politician Newin. Chai was appointed as head of the government whips, Jakrapob said.

Newin had earlier reportedly failed to push for his father to become the speaker of the House of Representatives.

Both Wan and Chonsawat have a negative public image as wayward children of powerful politicians.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej confirmed yesterday that both Wan and Chonsawat were among the appointees, despite heavy criticism and pressure for him to remove them from the proposed list of appointees.

"If Chonsawat remains on the list, so must Wan. Are you satisfied? That's it," said the prime minister, when asked about the matter.

Yesterday's Cabinet meeting lasted just 20 minutes and only dealt with the endorsement of political appointees.

Samak said the Cabinet meeting was brief because the ministers had to get back to attend the parliamentary debate on the government's policies.

'Getting rid of germs'

PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair said yesterday he would take one month to evaluate whether permanent officials were following government policy - or should be transferred.

Jakrapob is the minister overseeing the Public Relations Department and was responding to reports he would transfer Pramote Rathavinit, who is Director-General of the department.

Jakrapob said he did not intend to show off his power over permanent officials, but it was necessary to evaluate their performance in adhering to government policies.

"They will be evaluated on that basis only. It's not about personal matters, or about the past, or whether they supported the dictatorship. It is about the present, because we are a democratic government."

"We need to clean the germs. But what are the criteria? Where are germs? We will take one month for the evaluation," he said.

Here's nothing but yet another hi-so brat making faces to impress and bending over for success. Who does he think he is referring to people in government who differ with his or his criminal packed party's opinion as "germs", not too impressive for a PM's Office Minister. :o Only thing he's got going for him are a nice haircut and speaks decent English...big f#$% deal, he uses it mostly to swell his head up some more. The perfect Thaksin zombie to regain control over the media. Enjoy your short career while it lasts and while political parties like yours and politicians like you are still tolerated, both a dying breed.

A dangerous man playing dangerous games.

Watch him cry like a baby when it blows up in his face.

Should this present group of individuals who have taken the mantle of government be allowed to continue to set their stall out and follow on with the same arrogant snub, relating to the electing convicted criminals irrespective of public opinion, the future looks very bleak indeed.

In spite of these well publicised concerns of Thailands citizens that cover all sections of society, they continue to appoint these two thugs to such prominent positions.

This also looks like the setting up of the next generation of corrupt politicians who are cloned from the existing old guard of corrupt individuals, who over the years have bled the country dry of it,s coffers via their self serving objectives, unless they are stopped in their tracks and thrown out of office.

Samak has once again failed to show anything other that N.G.A.F. about Thailand, it,s reputation and right from wrong.

The parade of criminals in the new government is just astounding! It just never seems to stop.... :D :D

We're already familiar with Government Spokesman Wichianchot's criminal history posted above... and now, the Deputy Government Spokesman...

Police general appointed Government Spokesman

BANGKOK - Pol. Lt-Gen. Wichianchot Sukchotrat, former National Counter Corruption Commission commissioner, was appointed as Government Spokesman, according to Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office Jakrapob Penkair.

Jakrapob, serving as acting Government Spokesman, said after the weekly cabinet meeting that the body had approved Gen. Wichianchot's appointment.

Jakrapob said two spokesman's Deputies, Nattawut Saikua and Suparat Narkbunnum, were also appointed.

Nattawut was a core leader of the United Front for Democracy and Against Dictatorship which staged anti-coup protests in Bangkok.

- TNA

============================================

Nattawut and Jakrapob were previously arrested as instigators and leaders of a riot that injured hundreds... :o

The six, who were released on bail after 12 days confinement at Bangkok Remand Prison, included former key members of the now-disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party -- Jatuporn Promphan, Jakrapob Penkair, Nattawut Saikua <snipped>

SJ, I though it was just me that saw that but yes the list is astonishing. I wonder what countries will even want to do business with them. Most every deal will bring about an investigation in both countries knowing there will be some graft involved or no deal. This is not good for the face of Thailand in the eyes of the world for sure.

Thaksin loyalists get key government jobs

Samak seen as failing to get his men installed

The Cabinet yesterday endorsed the nominations of ministerial Advisers, Secretaries and Assistants with several key posts awarded to loyalists of deposed PM Thaksin Shinawatra. In focus were the appointments of Gen Ruengroj Mahasaranont, Pol Gen Chamlong Iamchaengphan, Pol Lt-Gen Wichianchote Supachotrat, Natthawut Saikua and Pol Lt-Gen Chat Kuldilok. A source close to the Cabinet said the selection of the political appointees showed that the deposed PM had pulled the strings. "The former PM usually appointed people close to him to key posts. He made the decisions alone and did not pay attention to the image [of the appointees]," said the source. Ruengroj and Chamlong, former Deputy Public Health Minister in the Thaksin administration, were made Advisers to Prime Minister Samak. Ruengroj was apparently awarded the job for being a key man launching efforts against the coup-makers and helped the PPP during the general election campaign in the North. Chamlong was also apparently given the post largely due to his connections with the Damapong [Thaksin's wife's] family. Wichianchote was appointed the Government Spokesman despite Samak's objection. Natthawut was appointed Deputy Government Spokesman largely due to his role as a former member of the pro-Thaksin UDDT. The group spearheaded a campaign against the coup-makers. Chat was appointed the PM's Deputy Secretary-General. He was a former close aide to Thaksin, the source said. According to the source, these appointments were proof Samak had no power in the coalition government.

All of this make a coup much more likely if the PPP don’t go down in relation to the Mr. Y. Issue or other legal challenge. Plenty of indicators that the government in power is the TRT and it was banned. So how far back has the clock turned now? Are we pre coup yet? If not certainly very close. The date of the next military shuffle will be a key factor here.

Posts for controversial sons

Two controversial sons of politicians have finally made their way into the government led by PM Samak. Wan Yubamrung and Chonsawat Asavahame were included in the list of Assistants and Secretaries to cabinet ministers approved yesterday. "If Chonsawat is in, Wan will be in too," Samak replied tersely to questions as he emerged from the meeting. The issue was over and he would not talk about it anymore, he said. He earlier opposed some names proposed by the PPP as Aides to Ministers and Deputy Ministers. He did not give names, but said they were subjects of criticism.

Thai gov't has always been filled with criminals.......maybe as the population becomes more educated (educational levels are increasing here) the voters will become more discriminating....maybe not.

Chownah

Even a most shallow analysis of modern Thai history would show that this govt. easily surpasses that of others over past two decades in the convicted and suspected criminal stakes. It would also indicate that speculation over increasing paper education levels are not so far leading to more discriminating voters, in fact seemingly the obvious when Samak can first be voted in as Bangkok Governor in the city where he played such a key role in bloody events in the 1970's and voters are known to be "most educated" and now as PM, after such a distinguished career of brutality, corruption and mismanagement in public office.

But we know you love to play devil's advocate Chownah and mostly people seem to indulge you your little fanciful whims and strange takes on reality. I guess this board needs people like you to avoid the regular perps getting too complacent. :o

I think it sends the wrong message to have Wan in gov't employ in any capacity but just out of curiosity does anyone actually have any information as to whether he has reformed?...people can change and sometimes they acually do change....this might be the case with him and I'm just wondering if anyone here really knows....seems like everyone thinks he hasn't reformed but do they know?

Wan is getting a high position on the back of this alleged "reform". It's his responsibility to show that he is indeed qualified to be a role model for Thai youth. So far we had no proof form with him or Health Minister who put him in this position.

Wan Yoobamrung

Controversial Appointees Appointed as Ministerial Secretaries

Two controversial appointees for ministerial jobs, Wan Yoobamrung, son of Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung and Chonsawat Asavahame, son of Puea Pandin Party chief adviser Vatana Asavahame, were appointed by the Cabinet yesterday as Secretary to the Deputy Public Health Minister and Secretary to the Deputy Interior Minister, respectively.

Wan has possessed a notorious image over the years for assaulting others and causing numerous pub brawls. He along with three other individuals were battling a court trial involving a murder case of a police officer who was shot to death at a Bangkok nightclub. The three were later acquitted by the ruling of the criminal court.

Chonsawat on the contrary, is facing a court trial for assaulting police and refusing to have an alcohol breath test at the highway patrol checkpoint.

Both individuals were often seen assaulting others with their societal status as sons of powerful politicians.

Despite recent build-ups of criticism against both appointees and pressure for Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to replace them with other candidates, Samak affirmed reporters yesterday that the two appointees will remain on the list.

When asked about their recent appointments, the Prime Minister furiously lashed out at reporters, saying that if Chonsawat was not removed from the list, Wan too must be appointed.

Reportedly, yesterday’s Cabinet meeting on the endorsement of the government appointees for ministerial jobs only convened for 20 minutes, since Cabinet ministers must return to attend the final parliamentary session on government’s policies debate.

In a related development, the Cabinet yesterday also appointed Chai Chidchob, father of banned Thai Rak Thai executive Newin Chidchob as chairman of the government coordination committee for parliamentary affairs or Chief of government House whip.

Prior to his appointment, Newin, who was still a prominent figure in the People Power Party (PPP) tried to nominate his father for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives, but was later rejected by other party MPs.

Role models do not have a criminal record and earn their right to be gainfully employed by the Government, specially in such highly prestigious positions.

Criminality should automatically bar them from office of such importance for x amount of years, especially when it is of the likes these of two sordid characters.

On the contrary as to how they were given these important posts, they should not become ministerial assistants based on cronism and who their parents and / or their asociates in crime are, but based on their hard earned, genuine qualifications and proven ethical demeanor

We have pictures of him holding a cigarette instead.

No personal reference to yourself by the way Plus, just qualifying what should be the criteria relating to such important positions within the government at such priviledged and important levels.

How demoralising these sort of arrogant snubs on law abiding citizens are, and more importantly, who are more qualified on all counts to / and indeed have earned the right to these positions.

Let us hope that they do not loose heart altogether and that they will eventually witness a fairer society and it,s government representatives rightly recognising and rewarding their efforts accordingly.

At the same time treating the likes of these thugs and their ilk with the contempt their efforts have rightly earned them !!!!!!!

While i am not Thai, as a member of what i consider a supporter of a fairer society, i cannot put into words how angry and saddened these appointments make me feel, and that is a fact.

How long until the other gets his picture taken with a drink in his right hand and a mia noi or maybe a gun on the left?

Smoking, drinking and waving a gun at policemen while groping a couple of beautiful women IS a role model for Thai kids.

You can run a democratic referendum to confirm it, it's a perfectly democratic choice. Thailand has democracy now.

I agree that a shallow analysis might support your statement.....heck, a shallow analysis might support ANY statement.....but even though a "shallow analysis" often means "biased interpretation" (this sort of thing fits in really well here on this forum where just about all the posts are based on shallow analysis) I'd like to see a shallow analysis of some previous gov't...can you provide one?...how about a shallow list of everyone in the gov't for starters......I won't hold my breath.

A devil's advocate will take any side to create an arguement....don't think that's what I'm doing but you are entitled to your opinion and to express it here. I wouldn't say that without me the regular perps would be complacent....they would probably be bored since they seem to have gotten a bit desperate since those people who like to think about whether Toxin's policies were right or wrong (instead of just declaring all of them bogus at the outset) have by and large stopped posting. What I like about it is that its fun to read some of the ridiculous replys to my posts....sometimes their replies are very revealing.

Perhaps with Chonsawat's rationale of declining a position or removing himself from the government because he "wants to clear up any questions about him first" regarding pending criminal investigations and/or conviction appeals, it will provide the impetus for others who are in exactly the same situation to follow suit, such as the Prime Minister, the House Speaker, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, the PM's Office Minister, the Deputy Government Spokesman, the Chief Advisor to the Puea Pandin Party, the Advisor to the Foreign Minister, and the Secretary to the Deputy Public Health Minister to identify but a few.
