Baby Needs Eye Surgery

Featured Replies

Our baby girl was born in Phuket at Bangkok hospital. Just after birth, our daughter develped problems with her right eye. We were told by the eye surgeon at Bangkok Hospital in Phuket that when the baby got older she would need surgery to unblock the tear drain on her right eye. We were told that this surgery could not be done in Phuket and we were referred to Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok. We have been told that Rama Hospital in Bangkok is much better than Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok.

The baby is now 8 months old and has suffered with this eye problem from birth. We have been told that she is now old enough to have this special surgery. Anyone out there who has any experience with Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok or Rama Hospital in Bangkok, please let us know your opinion. We have health insurance through our American insurance company and they will reimburse us 90% of the bill as long as it is out patient care and the baby does not need to be admited to the hospital.

We have decided to rent a car in Phuket and drive to Bangkok to have an appointment at either of these hospitals and then make the appointment for surgery on our return trip from Loei where we will visit my wife's family. As we have been told that the surgery skills are far superior at Rama Hospital than Bangkok Hospital, we are leaning toward that option. However, since living in Thailand we have never gone to a "government" hospital as we were told that the waiting period is very long. But in this case, we want the best care for our baby girl and we are willing to wait. However, if the wait is too long, we cannot afford to stay in a hotel in Bangkok forever. If anyone out there has had any experience with either of these hospitals please let us know. Or if anyone out there wants to recommend another option like another hospital in Bangkok or even returning to the states for this surgery. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
