Hi, I am with CAT Hinet, and seem to be getting blocked from certain websites. I racked my brains and tried various things until a friend suggested it may be the IP address is blocked. I tried rebooting the router, checked the new IP was different, and the sites worked. I am assuming this is why, but don't understand how or why these sites would block my IP address.

The main ones are Yahoo.com (although can access .th and .uk), and my web hosting provider who also supply my POP3 mailserver, which means when I have the wrong IP address I cannot send or receive mail (it won't even connect to the server), and I have to keep rebooting the router which is a pain in the @rse.

Anyone else had this - it seems to be a problem when one of the numbers in the IP address is 179. Is it likely to be permanent? Should I shout at CAT? If CAT are viewed with such disdain internationally maybe it's time to change ISP.

I do have a VPN in the States which does not seem to suffer from this, but it is too slow and I cannot work out how to get it working with CAT's SMTP for outgoing mail, but it will collect from the POP3. Would it be worth sending outgoing through the mailserver rather than SMTP and just stay on VPN?

I am not a tecchie by any means, and I could be completely wrong, but it seems a big coincidence that every time I am blocked, and subsequently change my IP it works

Any thoughts appreciated.

Maybe it's your computer.

First thing I would do is to check my comp down to the bones: for Virus, Trojans and Spys! It's possible that your comp is infected and therefore your IP blocked at that mement your comp try to "connect" to som "special" sites! If you have an other comp try to connect simultan via the same Modem/router to see the same problem exist!

Cheers.

Thanks Reimar, but I have 3 computers running off the same router and they all have the same problem.

May you need to check your complete network settings include the Modem/Router. Seems to be that you get some problems there! This can be happens if you use auto assigned IP's for the connecte computers.

Cheers.

But if the problem clears when I reboot and get a new IP that can't be it, can it?

You've 2 different IP's: 1 internal and 1 external

The internal is the one from your Modem/Router, let say 192.168.1.1 and the external one is the IP you ISP gives you like: 203.144. 207.29

Now if some of your computers are connected via the Modem/Router to the Internet the data go this way: Computer n(192.168.1.x) to Modem/Router (192.168.1.1) to ISP (203.144.207.29) and from there to the Internet. all your computer using the same Modem/router and are therefore connect together as Network!

If on of this computers is infected by an Trojan which has the ability to send himself out, it's possible that all in your network connected computer are infected. So, now this trojan not spread only in your Network but out to all connections, incl. Modem, Router, Internet!

Many websites are protected and if some try to connect with an running Trojan, that IP will be directly reported to the Spam-Cop Database and black listed.

So, you also need to check the Spam-Cap Databases for your banned and blacklisted IP and if your IP is in that Blacklist, you can be sure that all of your computers are infected.

That should be now your first step: google for the Spam-Cop Databases and check the IP's which are blocked and why!

Cheers.

OK, will do tomorrow - sounds complicated for this time of night. First I have to keep rebooting until I get a blocked IP as I didn't write them down.

Thanks Reimar, will let you know tomorrow.

EDIT// Afterthought: if I had a trojan would they not block all the IP's in my range rather than just 1 or 2?

OK, tried it with 2 different IP's that were being blocked, and they are NOT an Spam Cop's database. My head hurts.

If you can, just prepare an comp with clean new installation of Windows and check without to have the others connected to the Router/Modem.

If you still have that problem than only 2 solutions left: 1. the Modem/Router or 2. the ISP!

Try to find an new Firmware for your Modem/Router and update to first. Check with your ISP which settings you've to place in the Modem/Router and test again.

If that don't works: bother the ISP to send some engineer for to clear at your place.

Cheers.
