Wanted American Pedophile Arrested in Phuket

A suspected American pedophile has been arrested by the Phuket immigration police, after having hidden in Thailand since the middle of last year.

42-year-old Earl R. Bonds, who is suspected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of being a serial pedophile, has been arrested by the immigration police and the tourist police in the southern province of Phuket.

The accused confessed that he escaped to Thailand on August 31st last year and taught English at a language school in Bangkok, before working as the assistant manager for business development at a private company in Phuket Province.

According to the arrest warrant issued by the St. Louis Police Department, FBI agents asked for cooperation with Thai police to bring Bonds to justice after an investigation revealed that the suspect was hiding in Thailand.

The Thai police will turn the suspect in to the FBI for prosecution.

Apparently, there are several errors in OP according to recently obtained information. It seems that Bonds has been in Thailand for an unknown period of time, but quite possibly over 3 years...

US man held on child-sex charge

A man wanted in the US for child molestation was arrested yesterday in Phuket.

During questioning, Earl Russel Bonds, 42, tried to kill himself by cutting his wrist with scissors, but police seized the scissors in time. A police officer was accidentally cut in the palm during a scuffle with Bonds to grab the scissors.

Bonds was handed to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents at Phuket International Airport.

They flew him to Bangkok in the evening to await an extradition order to the US.

Bonds was with his Thai boyfriend when police arrested him at a house in Phuket.

Immigration records showed he had misused his US passport and overstayed his visa, which was revoked after the arrest.

Police said Bonds entered Thailand on August 30 last year and worked as an English teacher, then later as a freelance columnist.

Bonds did not resist arrest and admitted he was the person in an FBI wanted list. He excused himself from being questioned by both Thai and FBI agents.

Phuket police said Bonds asked for tranquilliser pills during his brief detention at the local immigration office before FBI agents picked him up. He grabbed the scissors and cut his left wrist when a police officer on guard turned away to get him water for the pills.

A native of St Louis, Missouri, Bonds has been charged in the US with molesting an 11-year-old boy in 2003.

American detained in Thailand over child sex charges in the United States

BANGKOK, Thailand - An American English teacher facing child sex charges in the United States was detained in Thailand, police and an embassy spokesman said Thursday.

Earl R. Bonds, 42, of Missouri, was detained Wednesday night by Thai police in Phuket, where he worked as an English tutor, after authorities received a request from the FBI for his arrest, said Police Col. Wiseth Kethphan, chief of the city's tourist police.

He was taken to Bangkok and expected to be remanded into American custody, Wiseth said.

It is believed that Bonds arrived in Thailand two months ago, he said.

Michael Turner, the U.S. Embassy spokesman, praised the cooperation between Thai and American authorities in making the arrest. He said Bonds may be extradited as soon as Thursday.

Turner did not have any specific details on the charges Bonds faces back in the United States.

Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam are popular destinations for pedophiles because of lax law enforcement, corruption in the justice system, and poverty that forces children into prostitution.

A number of high-profile Western pedophile suspects have been caught in Thailand in recent years.

PHUKET - A man wanted for child molestation by police in the USA state of Missouri was arrested Tuesday afternoon and has been turned over to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for extradition.

Bonds was with his Thai boyfriend when officers from the Phuket Tourist Police and Phuket Immigration Police arrested him at a rented house on Soi Yanui in Rawai about 2 pm on Tuesday.

Police said Bonds entered Thailand August 30 last year and worked as an English teacher, then later as a freelance columnist for an overseas publication.

Bonds did not resist arrest and admitted he was the person on an FBI wanted list, but refused to answer further questions, police said.

Phuket Immigration Police Superintendent Pol Col Chanatpol Yongbunjerd told the Gazette today he first received a report from Immigration headquarters in Bangkok that Bonds might have been hiding out somewhere on the island.

The initial investigation did not get far due to a lack of details and the fact that Bonds was listed as an African-American, which led investigators to expect him to have a much darker complexion than he actually does, Col Chanatpol said.

Immigration Police had visited his home once earlier, but did not arrest him because they thought he did not match the FBI’s written description.

Further investigation with the help of the Tourist Police led finally to the arrest, Col Chanatpol said.

Bonds had been issued a work permit by the Phuket Employment Service Office as an employee of STN Company Ltd, which described itself as a “business management and development services company”.

Police failed to locate Bonds at the address on the work permit, but subsequent investigation revealed that he had changed jobs and begun working as an English-language teacher and freelance writer, Col Chanatpol said.

At the time of arrest, Bonds had overstayed his permit-to-stay issued by Immigration, he added.

Bonds last year applied for work as a travel writer with the Gazette under the name Chris Bonds and supplied as a writing sample an Internet link to a short fiction story which won him first prize in a local writing competition held by The Boathouse in Kata.

The story is a first-person account of a child who is subject to sexual abuse at the hands of his own father.

In a strange irony that hints at the cycle of such abuse, the story is entitled Escape From Home.

St. Louis Most Wanted Suspect Arrested

"We're pleased to announce that Earl Russell Bonds from St. Louis was arrested in Thailand," says Zachary T. Lowe, Jr., Public Information Officer for the FBI's St. Louis Division.

Bonds was arrested in Thailand for charges in St. Louis, four counts of statutory sodomy. His victim? An 11-year-old boy.

"I've seen him interact with kids. He’s got kids of his own and he loves them," says a former friend who didn't want to be identified. "I haven't seen any signs that he would do something like this, but it doesn't come as a shock." In 2006 she spoke out, hoping Bonds would turn himself in. But, to no avail. The feds say in addition to leaving the country, Bonds used fake names and even cross-dressed to avoid authorities.

He has been featured on St. Louis' Most Wanted four times in the last two and a half years. The feds credit the public for helping them find him.

"He had gone through South Korea from China and finally ended up in Thailand. So this individual was using aliases trying to conceal where he was located and tips from the public here led us to focus our investigation on Thailand."

The FBI says Bonds was working as English tutor in Phuket, Thailand, but was booked in Bangkok Thursday morning.

After chasing him literally around the world, the FBI hopes his arrest will send a strong message.

"Even if you flee the United States, you can go half way around the world to Thailand, the Philippines, any country. The FBI has a presence, we're going to continue to look for those individuals and we're committed to getting violent offenders who prey on children.

I think it's worth noting that in the Earl Bonds YouTube video, they showed he has a valid passport, that it was issued using his real name, and that it was obtained after his arrest on four counts of underage sodomy charges in St. Louis in 2004.
