After reading through all these posts, both pro and con for Thanskin, it seems to me that ALL politics are the same( granted degrees vary) but who can point to a "goverment" that runs a "honest" platform? Don't you think all PM's or Presidents have "personal gain" on thier mind when taking "the job" of leadership. Bush has raped the USA and will go out a lot richer than he came in,with blood on his hands...it's the "same, same" with every president here. If "the people" are happy( majority)...let them be. The words on this formum will be nothing but "entertanment" in the long run. Take your high blood presure pill...sit back ..and enjoy the show...I'm sure it will get better :o

Hey guys, becaue you guys seek more enjoyment out of making people unhappy, I'll keep it real. In a way I am happy that Thaksin is back. Not in the way that if he is back in power I will have a harder time finding people to work for me.

have been quite happy since he left because I have no problem finding people to do my finishing work (most jewelry and other companies for that matter have moved to Vietnam). I imagine that most of you guys answering and listing on this website have a direct relationship to Thailand.

Have you guys seen the inflation? Have you seen the people in the last 12 months? Have you been to Laos, Cambodia, Burma and first hand experienced the growth of tourists there, while looking at the decline here? I doubt it, since it must be really tough being negative 100% of the time.

I welcome Thaksin back, he will only do this country good. Or maybe I'm wrong with a country that relies on the majority of it's income from exports. Maybe you geniuses can figure out how a strong baht relates to exports.

I asked my wife how much she was paid this time to vote for the PPP in the last elections, she said "nothing", so I asked her to go back down there and get her money. Didn't go down to well, but I thought it was funny. :D

I think it's funny also! :o:D

It's unequivocal: No more politics

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday vowed to stay out of politics and apologised to the public for the hardship caused by his involvement in a power struggle.

"My family and I have suffered from injustice. But this cannot be compared to the hardship that the people had to endure. They are the worst victims of political rivalry," he said at a press conference at The Peninsula Hotel.

He said he would not be involved in politics any more as he wanted to spend more time with his family after several years of running businesses and serving as prime minister.

The conference was his first in the Kingdom after living abroad for almost 18 months.

Thaksin landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 9.40am and spent about 20 minutes with his wife and children, close allies and several ministers in a VIP lounge. He greeted supporters with a "wai" and waved to them.

When he left the airport building half an hour later, he knelt to the ground to pay respect to the motherland in front a heavy presence of cameramen and photographers.

An hour later, Thaksin was at the Supreme Court, which later released him on a bail of Bt8-million.

At noon, he reported to the Attorney General's Office, which is looking into the SC Asset case. He was released on bail 15 minutes later.

At 2pm, he spoke to the press at Peninsula hotel.

In the evening, Thaksin went with Pojaman and their three children to a religious ceremony to pay respects to the late HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana at Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace.

At the press conference, Thaksin denied he was pulling the strings of the coalition government led by People Power Party. Many PPP members had flown to meet him in Hong Kong, but he said it was normal for politicians to have ties with him, as this was part of local culture.

It should not be seen as an attempt to make a political comeback, he said.

Thaksin said he had wanted to return since September 20, the day after he was ousted in 2006. But when the coup leaders asked him to live abroad for a while, he followed their request.

He said he wanted to help the coup leaders achieve national reconciliation, and had thought he would have to live abroad for two or three months at most.

But the conflict had not been solved, forcing him to extend his stay to almost 18 months.

Thaksin cried foul over actions that were taken against him after the coup.

He said he was treated unfairly by his accusers, who had levelled many allegations and charges despite his contribution to the country.

Even when he was ousted by the coup, he had helped to lobby for former deputy premier Surakiart Sathirathai, who was named as a contender for secretary-general of the United Nations.

He had been accused of deeds he had not committed and had been fingerprinted like a criminal.

Following the restoration of democratic rule, he said he was obliged to come back to clear his tarnished reputation and that of his family.

With the country having returned to democracy, he had decided to return to fight the charges against him and prove his innocence.

CORRUPTION

Ratchada land case to start on March 12

Ex-PM bailed by court, DSI on separate charges

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is due to stand trial on March 12 for corruption charges related to the purchase of a prize block of land near Ratchadapisek Road. He has been released on bail of Bt8 million.

Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, along with ex-Thai Rak Thai executives and People Power Party MPs, plus his three children, Thaksin yesterday applied for bail. He proposed Bt10 million in cash to the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders.

A panel of three judges settled on bail of Bt8 million with a condition that Thaksin not leave the country without permission from the court.

He was also barred from carrying out any activities that could affect the trial adversely.

The judges then revoked the arrest warrant for him.

About 200 supporters gathered quietly outside. They obeyed a sign outside the court saying "Making a noise and disturbing the court could be a breach of court authority".

The Attorney-General indicted Thaksin and his wife Pojaman, accusing them of violating Articles 100 and 122 of the National Counter Corruption law and Articles 152 and 157 of the Criminal Code through the purchase of land worth Bt772 million from the Financial Institutions Development Fund.

Thaksin then went to the Office of Attorney General to face charges of violating the disclosure law in relation to SC Asset Corp Plc's shareholding structure. Three others suspects, namely Pensom Damapong, Busaba Damapong and Pojaman, had turned themselves in earlier.

Thaksin denied the charges and refused to give a statement to members of the Department of Special Investigation, saying he would only testify in court.

The former PM was then released on further bail of Bt1 million with the condition he report to public prosecutors when he wants to leave the country.

Seksan Bangsombun, director-general of the Office of Special Litigation, said public prosecutors would decide on whether to indict the four on April 3.

Thaksin's lawyer, Kitiporn Adulrat, said his team might ask the Attorney-General

to investigate more witnesses.

About 200 people gathered outside in a show of support for the former PM, chanting "Thaksin, Thaksin" and raising their three fingers in a sign of "I love you".

Well I know the £ is down to 63 Baht from 70+ 3 months ago and that affects me ! and yes if the Baht is strong then exports will be expensive and difficult to place, but Thaksin's return I dont know! I will wait and see! :o

The prove are there, during Thaksin period, drugs were almost gone from Thailand, everyone knows about it.

Despite the damage that was caused, Thailand were almost drug free!

Now ever since the coup, citizens had started complaining that drug dealers are back!

I dont know where you received your informations.

There's no "almost" about it... The Grand Liberator said so quite definitively and completely:

Thaksin declares the country 'drug free area'

The Nation / Published on Apr 13, 2003

"The government is pleased to announce that the country is now a drug-free area and will proclaim victory in its war on drugs," said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

They voted for him because they are uneducated, they voted for him because they were paid to, blah, blah, blah.

Time to change the record.

:o I don't live in Thailand, so I don't usually comment on Thai politics.

But for the record, Thaksin has a lot of support from those who are feeling the pinch of rising prices and a stronger baht. I am renovating a house I bought in Bangkok, and all the construction matierials I need keep going up in price. My Thai girlfriend keeps complaining about the increasing price of food in the shops.

For many Thais, the reason they blame for this is the military administration and it's handling of the economy. Now I know that is not completely true, but for many ordinary Thais Thaksin returning is the first step to a better life, lower prices, and so on. I don't say that it is true, but just what the perception is for many ordinary working-class Thais.

Anyhow, it will be interesting to see what happens. As for me, myself, I would never trust any politician any farther than I could throw them.

:D

Let's hope that Thaksin is bluffing when he's repeatedly said to the student-massacreing Army folks that he's quit politics.

Actually he's said it to the general Thai public. What you call "bluffing," many more others would call "lying."

I'm not sure who this General Thai Public is? The point is that the student-massacreing Generals should stay in the barracks where they belong!

Those would be the people that read all the media reports in which he made these "promises" so many, many, many times.

Let the histrionics and drama queen theatrics roll on...

Snippets from:

I will die on Thai soil: Thaksin

Thaksin Shinawatra has returned to Bangkok to clear his name and begin another tumultuous phase of Thai politics 17 months after his ouster.

He was bailed on a surety of eight million baht after being ordered not to leave the country before the first hearing date of March 12.

"I will not return to the political stage," he said. "I am 59 this year, so I just want to enjoy the last stages of my life with my family, in my country. I will die on Thai soil."

Hmmm, isn't the bloke at the helm today saying there was no massacre in '76 (apart from 1 unlucky soul)? With that statement ome might think he is at the side of the "student-massacreing Generals", at least the generals of that era of anti communist sentiment...

problem is the "ghost" is the militaries guardian angel. while he's still around this country it is never going to be any better off where a new generation of Thai's can really really expect democracy and greater equality for the rural masses.

Does anybody have the picture of Potjaman all teary eyed at the press conference?

I thought the "glupping" when he stepped on the tarmac deserved an oscar.... but Potjaman's performance surpasses that.

Just exactly how is he going to be acquitted in the land deal etc? Isn't that all clearly documented already? Presumably they'll get a slap on the wrist which still won't come close to anything like the tax they should have paid originally.

Strange how no invitation from you know who was forthcoming upon his arrival.

Spokespersons for ex premier affirm the latter's non-aggressive presence in the nation

Personal spokespeople for deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra Pongthep Thepkanjana (พงศ์เทพ เทพกาญจนา) and Sansanee Nakpong (ศันสนีย์ นาคพงศ์) reaffirmed in a press conference that Dr Thaksin has washed his hands off politics and will not take part in the government in any capacity. He has commented however that he is open to give advice to those who may seek it from him.

The spokespeople also revealed that Dr Thaksin admits that he had contact members of the Council for National Security (CNS) before his return. Rumors circulating that he has scheduled a golf game with General Sonthi Boonyaratglin however were denied. The former Prime Minister affirmed that his presence in the nation was to deal with his court cases and that he would not be making any aggressive moves against those who had ousted him. He affirmed that he would deal with his legal matters in a straight forward way and believes that he will be able to overcome them.

Mr. Pongthep reiterated previous comments by the ex-premier, saying that if his cases were settled he would spend most of his time in the realm of sports and education with usual visits to his football club Manchester City in the UK. Nonetheless, for the time being Dr Thaksin stated he will stay in the nation to prepare for his court date on March 12th.
