Has The 800,000 Baht Requirement For Retirement Extension Of Stay Been Changed To 1 Year?

I heard a rumour today that the 800,000 baht deposited in a Thai bank requirement has been increased from 3 months proof of deposit to 12 months.

I know rumours abound in Thailand but any truth in it?

It would surprise me very much because the clear intent of the rule is that you have money to spend down during the year. The seasoning requirement is to prevent people from playing games with short term loans. I think it is a ridiculous rumour. I certainly hope so!

:o I think that is a misunderstanding. The 800,000 Baht is intended to show that a retiree has the funds to maintain him/her self in Thailand as I understand it. The requirement is that it must have been in a Thai bank account for 3 months PRIOR to the first application for a retirement visa.

It is also my understanding that each annual review/renewal of the retirement visa requires the same 800,000 baht in the bank for the next year's extension.

I think what is being confused is the initial requirement for the 800K to be in a Thai bank for 3 months prior to the initial visa and the requiremnt for an extension of the visa for another year also requiring 800K for that year.

I'm sure I will be told so on this forum if I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

:D

Frankly, I have seen poorly written wording of these requirements that could easily lead one to believe what the OP is suggesting is a change. But I really don't believe it. Go have a beer and relax. This is not for real.

We are waiting for official rumor crushing pronouncements from one of the various medical officers here, namely the notorious Dr. Pong.

Whilst your intentions may be good these sorts of posts are not very helpful. Without any basis, it's best to ignore this until you can substantiate. Please?

I renewed my retirement visa for second year in a row on 05 March--last week--and showed that I had had 800K baht in my bank for previous 3 months and had no problem--in Chiang Mai--but I realise that all Immigration Offices seem to do things differently.

Good idea. Too bad there isn't a way to rate threads with NEGATIVE numbers.

I was informed by PM that a reader has taken the above to mean we would like this report to be true - that was not my intent - the meaning was we would be happy to open the discussion again if it were to hear substantiated information rather than a single rumor. We held it open for several hours for any further information but it did not appear.

No truth in it at all.
