I have a problem with file associations within Firefox. I use Firefox as my default browser and Foxit as my default PDF reader. If I double click a PDF file on my PC it's opened by Foxit which is what I want because it's got so much less baggage than Acvrobat. If I open a PDF file within Firefox when I'm on the 'net it's opened by Acrobat. If I try and close that particular tab down it crashes Firefox. How can I force Firefox to use Foxit as default PDF opener?

I've also found that opening PDFs within a browser causes the browser the become unstable and generally less responsive. I started using this Firefox extension and it helps greatly: PDF Download

Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but i hope it helps.

As I said I have Foxit set as the default program for PDF files in Windows and it works. I double click on a PDF file and Foxit opens it. It's only when I open a PDF file inside Firefox that it's opened by Acrobat.

Endure,

Firefox maintains its own list of applications that are used for different extensions. It does not matter what you have set in Windows.

In Firefox 2 it is:

Tools

Options...

Content Tab (selected from top)

File Types Section; Manage...

Lets face it, opening PDFs in a browser totally sucks. The solution is to set your browser to *download* PDFs instead of opening them. You can choose to do this in tools/options/file types/manage/advanced in Firefox, as the previous poster mentioned. There is absolutely no need to download any additional software.

Why opening PDFs is the default behaviour, I cannot understand.
