Using a Program called "Simply Accounting" I created accounting files which should have the extension *.asc .

Since creating the Files I have upgraded my Computer, re-installed Windows XP Pro and the Simply Accounting program and I now find that these Files have Extensions *.sdw and *sdb which Windows Explorer identifies as "Appfix package" .

I have Googled this but not being particularly Computer savvy cannot make head nor tail of the information called up by the search!

How can I open these Files in Simply Accounting?

Any help gratefully appreciated!

May you go to this Website: http://www.fileinfo.net and check for the file type or this site: http://filext.com/

After you know that you can google like: convert .sdw to .xxx or some like that.

Cheers.

I think you need to associate these file types with the Simply Accounting s/w package. I don't know why that association has been lost. By the way, ".sdb" is a Simply Accounting file type.

I don't know why the extensions started as ".asc" and ended up as ".sdb" and ".sdw", but you can remake the association as follows - maybe do it for one of the three extensions at a time until it all works properly.

I would also back up all the ".asc", ".sdb" and ".sdw" files before you do this - keep the copies somewhere safe.

In Windows Explorer: click on Tools / Folder Options / File Types. Scroll down "Registered file types" until you get to "SDB" in the "Extensions" column. Then click on "Change", Click on "Select the program from a list" and "OK".

Either:

1. If your "Simply Accounting" program is listed under the "Programs" list, click on it and check the box labelled "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Then click "OK" and "Close".

OR

2. If your "Simply Accounting" program is NOT listed under the "Programs" list, click on "Browse" and then use the "Open with..." window to browse to the application - usually in a "Program Files" folder. You need to select the executable - the file with an ".exe" extension. Click on the .exe file and then on "Open". Then check the box labelled "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Then click "OK" and "Close".

OR

3. If you cannot browse to the "Simply Accounting" program, you may need to reinstall it.

There are other ways to associate the file types with the Accounting application: eg. click on the .sdb file and you should get straight to the "Select the program from a list" window, but what I've said may prove useful in the future. :o

Many thanks to both of you.

Finally figured out it was my fault, the Files were created by Simply Accounting Ver. 8, but when I upgraded and re-installed the application I installed Ver. 4 by mistake and apparently the new Files were not backward compatible!

All OK now after installing the newer Version.
