How old are you and where's your incision (side or a bit around in front) and how long is it?

Thanks, just curious.

I,m 70 incision on side just a guess about 12in I,m sure is old style no staples it is thin and long as they are now using much larger head or ball on the implant which they say results in far fewer problems

Just to add one final comment,It is now 24 days since my surg.I am back on my motorbike, shopping and doing all of my normal activities. On a scale of 1-10 i,m a 7. This has been a virtual no pain experence and a true gift and blessing.I wish that I had done this 4years ago

Congrats. That's good to hear. I can imagine that you went into the op w/ some trepidation, yet it's turned out great! BTW, did you get post-op physical therapy at Queen Sirikit or what?

no pt doc just said "go home and listen to your body"amazing thailand!

Congratulations on your quick recovery Yanabill1.

I had my second hip replacement on 23/5 in Australia. Virtually free because of my private health insurance. Also have an incision about 12" long on the side of my rump. They used 27 staples to hold it together. I had some complications in hospital from an attack of gout and because of a chronic knee injury on the same side of my body. (needs a full reconstruct soon)

Today is 5 weeks later and the hip is brilliant. I've been driving for about 2 1/2 weeks despite it being on my right side. Still on crutches, but mainly because of the knee.

If it is of any confidence and help:

I underwent a complicated ankle surgery at the Queen Sirikit Navy Hospital at Sattahip/Cholburi. Spartan applies to the rooms and the amnety equipment (wheel chairs, coffee shop etc.). And yes, you better arrive at 7 am as you have to queue (like the rest of the lot) which will give you medical access 60 to 90 minutes later (alas, exept emergencies). Dr. Danai Pangdaeng (high in the Navy ranking by his stripes and the way naval "underlings" treated him), in a rather military short fashion, diagnosed, instructed and ultimately operated on me. His English was absolutely more than enough to explain and talk to me. Not only did he and his extremely disciplined team a PERFECT job but I also browsed through my medical file lateron while waiting (yes, unbelievable but possible) and was absolutely stunned about the perfect, chronological and accurate file keeping (diagnoses, x-ray reports, instructions, operation protocols incl. EKG, and all other sorts of diagrams, the anestaesist's report, the nurse clocking the entire operation and the post operation treatment. Two nights, single room, (almost) pain free, around the clock medical care and a surgery job which could not have been done better in my native Switzerland for less than THB 18K. Competence on all levels except patients logistics by letting the latter wait unnecessarily for individual steps within the hospital's maze of departments.

I would see this hospital and its doctors anytime again for any orthopedic treatment; something I cannot say of the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital nor the Pattaya International Clinic.

Has anyone had a hip replacement using Thai social insurance? I am thinking of getting in the queue at Ladprao General for surgery and would like to hear some endorsements or warnings first.

For active people, at the current time, I am convinced that hip resurfacing is usually a much better choice than total hip replacement (THR) for people with good bone quality. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject as I have done much research on the subject and have had my own hip resurfaced so I would suggest you check out this alternative to a THR. Although they do hip resurfacing at Bumrungrad, I would not suggest having it done there or in the US as it is a very difficult operation and most doctors are fairly new to the procedure and not experienced enough by having at least a thousand surgeries under their belt yet. Currently of the four top hip resurfacing surgeons in the world, 2 are in England, 1 is in Belgium, and 1 is in Chennai India. The total cost of a hip resurfacing by Dr Bose in India ( whom I consider the very best of the group) is approximately 240,000 Baht which includes everything including hospital stay. As opposed to a THR ,with a hip resurfacing, there is virtually no bone loss and you can return to running marathons, triathalons, tennis, rugby, wild sex :) or any other sport you want with absolutely no restrictions. If anyone is serously considering hip resurfacing and has any questions or needs more info, please feel free to pm me. I can also direct you to forum web sites on the subject of hip resurfacing versus THR.

Sounds like you're a Bose Hippy. I am almost 3 years since my surgery in Chennai, hip resurfacing made a positive impact in my life. Went back to cycling about 6 months post-surgery and was doing 50+ kilometer rides. Stopped a year ago only because BKK roads are just too dangerous. Continue to practice yoga and started salsa dancing as well. For those who are considering surgery and waiting until the pain becomes unbearable, if you are a candidate for resurfacing, no point in waiting, also be aware that hip degradation is not constant.

Since I am due in a few weeks I like to ask this.

I lost about 2 cm bone due to my bad hip. Do you think a resurfacing will still be possible ? I see the hospital next week and like to be informed.

Other question. I once heard that if you get the operation NOT lying on your back that the surgeon has to cut muscles and nerves (?)... If so, will it take more time to recover and get full controll over your leg ?

Next. Is anaesthesia in the spine really so much better than artificial respiration ? I think so but heard that some people get very sick afterwards from the "valium" like stuff they drip into your vains to make you a bit sleepy...

Thanks.
