I need an adventure. I've no climbing experience and I wouldn't know where to start, but I'm having thoughts of climbing Everest. Any climbers, advice, links relevant for my proposed expedition? Anyone want to join me even?? Thanx in advance for replies :o

i'm afraid without my respected intervention your thread would have died a slow death... probably during the course of which many a 'sex-pat' would have made lewd comments about your hobby...

i too am an avid climber... may i recommend the following site entitled 'Climbing in Thailand'... i reckon it would be a good starter for one contemplating an assault on the 'big-one' (and no i don't mean that big fat bird in the nana plaza :o )

sorry i can post the url in such a way that you can just click it but that is forbidden by the board manager... hopefuly this won't offend the management...

Climbing Mt Everest used to be a unique experience. But, I think nowadays it is becoming a bit of a 'trendy' thing to do. Don't get me wrong, take alot of guts and stamina to get to the top. But doing ascending Hilary's step with another 100 climbers is not worth 50 grand US.

Before you go read "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer (sp?). An unforgetable account of the perils of Everest. Written by a climber whose purpose was to write a short article about his private expedition, which then turned into a book detailing events about the 10+ people who died during that expedition. Also gives a great historical account of Everest's climbing past.

It's easy to find in Thailand, it's distributed through Asia books.

I say 'Go For It!'.

If you were to wake up on your 50th birthday and you looked back on your life, what do you want to be looking back on? Saying to yourself 'I should've done this' or 'I should've done that'.???

Go ahead and do it. Even if you don't succeed at reaching a particular level or point of Everest then in the future you can say that you at least tried. :o

One day when I didn't have anything to do I spend the afternoon researching climbing expeditions. Just do a Google seach on Everest expeditions. There's more than a few companies out there that specialize in expeditions to Evereest. Actually, if that's too much for you there are other, easier mountains to climb, for less money. It all sounds like fun, but I'm not so sure I'd want to leave the cozy confines of my computer chair.

Or try Mt Kilimanjiro in Kenya. My mate went with a travel company, Hayes & Jarvis about 18 years ago. He was expecting to do a lot of climbing but he reckoned that you just walk up it. Still, you'll need to be bloody fit to be able to get to the top. :o
