Medical Insurance

Featured Replies

Dear Thailand Forum:

As the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Calgary, Ablerta, Canada, I get a number of "outre" questions. This one deals with a gentleman inquiring about medical insurance while he is in Thailand teaching ESL. Could anyone assist me by giving me the names of medical insurance companies, either in Thailand or in Canada, that deal with this issue? Contact e-mails or websites would be appreciated.

Love your forum - I have saved almost all the postings!

Hi Tical,

Some foreign EFL teachers in Thailand (the ones who teach at state schools) are covered by group health plans at work. But it is far from uniform, and I suspect there may be more than one plan even for them.

Easy – you are a member of Thai Visa so use the Thai Visa Insurance service and let them search the best options for you !

  • 1 month later...

If he's teaching legally he'll be paying into Thai Social Security, which after an initial 3 month waiting period provides medical care.

The most he will pay will be 750 baht per month.

It includes in and out-patient care, surgeries, lab work, x-rays and medications. It doesn't include elective stuff.

When he starts work he can ask for a Social Security brochure. They have them in english.
