PeaceBlondie
thaks, cathyy. You inspired me to validate my point that expatriates need to keep in mind, if they are not paying into FICA or SE tax while living abroad. http://ssa.gov/dibplan/dqualify2.htm This sentence says it: "Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you become disabled." Forty credits may give you RETIREMENT benefits, but not disability benefits, which expire after ten years abroad. We faced this dilemma when we converted from one civil service pension to another in 1987, when some employees did not convert to the new pension because they would not have been covered for disability. This is for the DI portion of OASDI, which you earn by paying FICA or SE tax. See related parts of the ssa.gov website for info about SSI. Again, that first citation says, "IMPORTANT: Remember that whatever your age is, you must have earned the required number of work credits within a certain period ending with the time you become disabled."
