Hey Plasticpig,

just wondering if your binoculars are intended for "daytime/terrestrial" use......or you are into doing a bit of

"stargazing/astronomy" with them??

If it's Astronomy you're into then you're pretty much snookered in Pattaya and a trip to Bangkok(minimum) is

required.

If for daytime use I'm sure there's choices.... There's an "Army Surplus/Swiss Army knife"- type shop on the

ground floor of Big C,North Pattaya, that may well do some(particularly compacts).

Also,in the same complex,in the shop "Big Camera", I have personally seen in the last few days Bino's for sale!!!!.........

only problem here,I'm not sure the extent to which you mean "good quality" and if your budget is say....

2,500 or 25,000??

For sure,high-end brands like Fujinon/Zeiss etc.. etc.. won't be available in Pattaya, but I'm very specific with

my need and everyone may not be as picky as me :o .

When you are trying out Bino's the "Large objectives" should be checked for colour and looked into!!!.......they

should be "multi-coated" with anti-reflective COLOURING,and you should NOT be able to see very much reflection

off your face,if any at all!!!

Needless,to say, quite ubelievably, the staff in some shops here in Pattaya tried to tell me,when I commented

on the fact that these objectives were like looking into a mirror,..."Very good sir, yes, number 1 sir,you can buy"....

not their fault,God bless them, they just don't know this was a major flaw of the Bino's I was looking at,and

not actually a selling-point.If you do get a pair of Bino's in Pattaya that have quite good colour coatings to

both objectives(large ones and the small eyepieces),well done and I'd be very interested to know where you

bought them!!

Happy Hunting,and here's 2 pictures of the Bino's I've recently bought(in Singapore)....one showing the

"objective-type colouring" you're looking for and the other is them on my bed with a coke-can for

size reference on the size of the beasts :D:D:D

Hi Thanks for the reply.

The bino's are for day time use to pick out large objects around half a kilometer away.

Had a look at the ones on the stools around town but

think if they get a bit of water on them its condensation time on the inside?

Thanks for the tips about bino's. will have a look next week in the Big C

will let you know. Only looking to spend around 4-7 thousand baht.

Thanks again.

There are a few yachting supply stores at Ocean Marina, they will probably have good quality water prof binoculars.

Just for the sake of conversation....It's a "binocular"...."binoculars" would be two binocular units.

I know...."shut up pumpuiman, who gives a shit" :o

Hey,

not at all Pumpuiman....nothing wrong with a good-natured shit-stir at all....despite

the fact that it's a shit-stir on very shaky ground :o:D .......there are soooo many examples

in English language of how the usage of the "s" in these instruments are correct......so I won't bore

you and keep you all day.......let's see....I'll give you just one example.......

"Possessive Adjectives"........that being the use of my/your/his/her/its/our/their in conjunction

with a noun....(in this case "binocular")........the sentence being for example........

"His binoculars are on the table".........

of course,if for example, one were talking about a book or a pencil, then we would use "is" and not

"are"!!!! Binoculars however, are by very definition 2 entities so-to-speak(bi=2 objectives, versus

mono=1 objective).....monocular/binocular.

Therefore it would be more naturally instinctive for an English speaker(not to mention correct),to say...

..My monocular is........ + My Binoculars are.....

Anyway,I'm rambling needlessly now :D:D

I'm off to MK Restaurant for a bit of grub....

Take care all.............

Hey Pumpuiman,

I am suitably stuffed after my MK feast. This is a danger of this turning into a majar thread deviation

so I'll only answer once here and conclude with my hope/wish that Plasticpig gets what he's

looking for!!!!!........whatever these things are called :D:burp: .....

A bit like Politicians in England from both sides giving genuine reasons for their policies and

to an outsider "both' being correct...well it gets nowhere really....for example we could do this

"grammatical dance all night"....meaning I could respond like this..(my Oxford English Dictionary)

binocular definition.."two telescopes fixed together, that makes objects that are far away

seem near when you look through it:a pair of binoculars;"I looked at

the birds through binoculars"..."

Binoculars(even 1 pair) are inherently "bi-nominal"...that is an object that has 2 groups of something,

I mean,we call even "1" of these, a pair...that's kind of a good indication as to why the plural is always

used with "possessive noun" grammar!!!!

I'm hoping you can see my logic here(to be honest I think you always did and honestly agree

with me,but,it's all a bit of crack,as the Irish say).....

Let's leave it at that eh!!!.... B) ...as in there being no need for a reply.."thread deviation and all.."

...besides,this is my last post on this issue!!!!!!!

You're probably a smart guy,and I'VE NO DOUBT could google and download more "logical-counters'"...

But in cases like these I always refer to COMMON SENSE and LOGIC to clarify!!

Assuming you're a NATIVE English speaker what would your HONEST opinion be of

the following 3 spoken sentences regarding " 1 PAIR".......

*"My binocular are very nice"

*"Excuse me,how much are your binocular?"

*"I looked at the birds through binocular"

hmmmm.... don't know about you,but it sounds mighty strange to me :D:D ...now if we were

to re-speak the sentences with the plural(even though it's only 1 pair)...that sounds much better,

I'm sure you'd agree.......I know,I know....you can bring up more counters,but there's no need to

respond,for if in doubt,just give it my "common-sense,logic approach"...............I mean,can you

honestly tell me you'd say "I've got a lovely pair of binocular.." :D ............as you can see from my

picture of "some" of my book collection shown on my bed...I can inform you that dozens of

experts/gurus in the field of Astronomy(such as Sir Patrick Moore--"Sky at Night" fame).....all

these blokes with Oxbridge degrees in English/Astrophysics/Maths..

EVEN GOOD OLD STEPHEN HAWKINGS.... they ALL refer in their books to it being a

"pair of binoculars" :o:D

I know, you're a smart guy,but I'm afraid I'll have to trust the judgement of the authors of the

60+ Astronomy books I have in my house that ALL refer to "...astronomy with binocularS".........

fuuny that,no one seems to adhere to your "singular, possessive adjective/noun,usage"....

could all be a Conspiracy theory though :D:D .....and maybe the Worlds greatest minds, from

Stephen Hawkings to Sir Patrick Moore et.al. are just all making one of the biggest

grammatical errors in human history,......you never know............. maybe all these

English and Science Oxbridge Dons have ALL made huge errors when writing their books???????????

Sorry about that Plasticpig.......getting back on-thread with just one message to you also...

I'm sure you already know,but...unless you intend to use a tripod with your binoculars, then about

10 times magnification is about the highest mag. you can realistically hold for an extended period

of time!!!!!!! I've got a pair of 15 mag. and they get mighty shaky,my 25 times mag. being just

impossible.Something like 7 by 50's/10 by 50's would do the job nicely......the zoom bino's may seem

like a good set-up,but unless you're going to be using a tripod they're no use at all really. If you want to go

even more portable, then Ocean Marina type products I'm sure will do nice, smaller compacts(7 by 42's etc)....

Anyway, good hunting, the main thing being,if for "hand-held use" try not exceeding 10 times mag!!!!!! :o:D:D

Briefely of topic again.

Does that mean that a pair of trousers are actually two trouser units :o

Hey ZZZ,

It was a good point you initially made about the Ocean Marina Yacht Club.....never been in myself

but might take a trip down this week and see if they have any nice pairs for sale :o:D

As for the rest,well...on the "s" or not to "s" front,I'll let Stephen Hawkings do my talking :D:D

**PS...Have you taken a visit down to the Marina yourself + if so how did you find it!!!!!!!!!!!

MANY THANKS...........

There are a few small shops in the marina with basic yachting supplies, GPS, charts, ropes...

Can not remember seeing binoculars but would imagine they may have some.

"I've got a lovely pair of binocular.."

Actually, I've got a lovely pair of monoculars.....which are called a binocular.

I realize that the whole world calls them "binoculars"...making "past practice" rules come into effect.

But the original name (what they were called when invented) is still "correct" in my pain in the arse opinion.

I will fight for the right to sound like an idiot till death :o

Well checked out the Big C down stairs in the army type shop three pairs

In there but none water proof and one had dirt on the inside of the lens.

Went to Louts in Jomtien found a lady selling Binos at a stool near the cash tills.

Only one waterproof pair, loads of big ones but not waterproof

She had a Nikula 10x30 114/1000m with coated lens, Nitrogen filled.

Had a look in the end and could only see a slight reflection of myself

Tested them in the car park looks very clear. Only 3200.00 baht

Don’t think I will get much better for that in Pattaya as this is cheap pair.

Any opinions anyone? I cant find this brand name on the webb?

Well done Plasticpig,

3,200 Baht...as you say, can't go far wrong with that. Not surprised they're not a brand name

for that price, never heard of them myself, but if you're happy with them, that's the main thing!!

The big thing is they've got at least some type of colour coatings and are 10 times mag.

To be honest mate,I'd be doubtful about the "waterproof, nitrogen" claim at that price, but

even if they're only a good clear pair of bino's,the price still isn't too bad!

The idea of "interior sealed nitrogen" is for there to no build-up of condensation/dew on the

inside of the lenses.Your lenses should be cleaned as little as possible and I wouldn't recommend

doing the following, but you can if you want to.

Sit in you bedroom with some really cold air-con on.You'll have your bino's in the bedroom, and stay

there for a good hour or so.Then go ouside with your bino's if it's a nice hot, humid night.Of course

your large-end objectives will all condense up on the outside, but if you were to carefully wipe

them clear,then check if there's any condensation/wetness on the inside.If correctly "nitrogen-purged"

they should be clear on the inside.

It's never a good thing to be wiping down your lenses of course(scratching)....so me personally,I always

keep my bino's out of cold air-con environments so that they are at ambient temperature already

and don't have to ajust too much....

****PS..Go to the website www.arizonagoldprospectors.org and follow the link on the homepage

to Buy &Sell Equipment....the Nikula Brand bino's are detailed there

Actually, you're very wrong. It is binoculars.

Ocular is like an organ of vision that detects light.... thus two of them together are two monoculars ie. binoculars.

I know.... you're still right.... i'll shutup!
