Jail, cane for Thai man who overstayed 208 days

BRUNEI: -- A 42-year-old Thai was imprisoned for three months and given three strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to overstaying in the country.

Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri heard from the Immigration Prosecutor that Bunsong Bunthaen had overstayed for 208 days after his employment pass had expired on March 25, this year.

The defendant was arrested three days ago when Immigration Enforcement officers raided a house under construction at Kg Tanah Jambu where the defendant was working.

Moreover, according to the prosecution, investigations showed that Bunsong had been compounded a sum of $600 by the Immigration Department on March 11, this year for a previous immigration offence and was released with a special pass valid up to March 25 pending his repatriation to Bangkok.

However, he chose to run away and stay unlawfully in the country.

Now, there's a way Thailand could deal with overstays. 200 baht per day up to 20,000 baht, then after that one stroke of the cane for each week or month overstayed. They can have a caning room in the airport. You certainly would have fewer overstays that way.

But you would probably have a room full of farrangs who overstayed intentionally just to get a whipping

Perhaps graduates of British public schools? I've only heard things; never been to one. :o
