Several people have contacted TG and have been told that TG will discontinue their direct, non-stop service between BKK and JFK, aka The New York Express as of 30 June 2008. Further TG may modify their direct, non-stop service between BKK and LAX to incorporate a change in aircraft and a stop, presumably in KIX. Details to follow as/when TG makes an announcement.

Just a heads-up if you are holding a ticketed itinerary, you may wish to examine your options then contact TG.

Seems like THAI has been taking about discontinuing these two non-stop flights almost from the moment when they first began.

Couple of months back, Thai discontinued Mon and Fri flires from AKL _ BKK, outbound Thurs and Sunday,

I had to change my bookings.

As of then fares have gone up.

Most flites I have been on were alqya about full.

Must be sumfin going on in rationalising their operations.

All airlines doing it now.

Latest (fairly reliable) info is that the final decision on whether to terminate the JFK route has not yet been made but is likely to be made at a THAI board meeting on the 6th June. It is true that TG are no longer accepting reservations on this route for flights after the 30th June so a termination certainly looks to be on the cards.

The problem is that these ultra long non-stop flights burn so much fuel (simply by carrying the extra fuel required) that they can never be economic at anything like the current oil price. Flying JFK-BKK with a connection in Europe only takes 2-3 hours longer so I think that it is inevitable that the non-stop polar routes will be discontinued eventually.

Added to that, THAI faces a shortage of aircraft on other (presumably more profitable) routes, hence the AKL route being reequipped with reduced frequency.
