Banglamung Cable TV was there and reported the story, but I was told later that Raviporn village had paid them off not to broadcast it, fearing about the adverse publicity.

Who's to say that the burglars didn't pay off the security guards as payoffs and bribes are quite common in Thailand, take the police for example.  As it was pointed out, these security people are paid a paltry salary so when they are presented with an lucrative offer to look the other way, oh well.

This is why my wife won't live in a house in her own country. That's why we live in a condo with triple layer security. Sad state of affairs.

Sorry mate just don't buy that one.

Are you telling me your wife would not be happy

To live in a House in her name, Have a big guard dog, A good security system.

some place for the inlaws to come and stay, a nice garden for the kids to ply in also a great asset for her kids or yours when your gone.

Think not, Pull the other one. :o

Surprise is the key. Fear is the lock.

Adopt a pet tiger.

If money were no object I'd have a buffer zone between entrance and bedroom.

When burgler enters maze of confusing lights and flase targets appear//

a voice says "your move sucka!"

Why is it so hard to believe? We weighed up the options and since I spend a lot of time travelling she said she is not happy to live in a house because the condo we live in is much more secure. Who cares who'se name, we are married. Also when we travel to UK we can leave the condo empty and no one knows, not the same in a house. Not just security though, the condo has fitness centre, tennis courts, pool, shops, restaurants and close to BTS. In our opinion, much better than a house.

LOL to the Tiger :o

We actually use our dogs as a "buffer zone" - we have one dogo at the entrance and our other sleeping at the base of the stairs leading to the bedrooms. From those positions they have a 360 degree view, and all accesses are covered. Our alarm system has sensors that can beep when the doors/windows are opened which we do use but I wonder if I can program a voice with "YOUR MOVE SUCKER" to be active only at night. We already have the sensor lights in place which work wonders, even if its sometimes the odd cat that sets them off :D

Gun..

Might be hard to find a midget though....

been robbed myself out there on a very well to do village, got paid out on insurance but didn't cover everything, plus the fact you've had some scumbag looking through your personal things which makes my flesh crawl still thinking about it...

we know the security guards get paid little and can do nothing to change that....what about a performance related bonus system paid every 3 months to the guards directly???

bet they'll be a bit more vigilant then?

they did catch a security guard in my village after i'd sold and moved back to U.K....without a doubt that scumbag was the one who done my house :o

If you are thinking of renting or buying here, buy a gun as these guys go in your room armed and with no police around here, your on your own. If no have gun pretend to be asleep and let them rob you or you will be killed in your bed.

That's stupid advice. If you wield a gun it's more likely they'll shoot you unless you are prepared to shoot them first, in which case you'll probably be in more trouble than you were in originally, with some dead burlars on your bedroom floor.

If it is that dangerous to live in a quiet subdivision, then people may want to think twice about living in Thailand.

My village Raviporn on Kho Noi (boonsampan), had 5 break ins last night, in one of the break ins the Thai burglar sexualy assalted a young mother and held a knife to her childs throat, the police were informed and told her to come down to banglamung police station to file a report. In another a 70 year old man was punched 4 times and forced to hand over money and valuables. In the last 6 months there have been 30 such crimes in the village. Wheres the security i hear you ask, they were asleep and did,nt notice anything. i spoke to an ex farang burglar " surprised, i thought everyone was honest here" :o and he told me the best deterent is them sensor flood lights that light your house like blackpool illuminations when someone gets in range, i have them im alarmed with a highish wall and i have a sign outside in thai and english saying "beware electric frenc" well it should be fence be thats how the security company decided to spell fence

There's quite sophisticated "beam" alarms on the market now. Put them on the inside of your perimeter walls.

They don't detect birds, cat, gecko's etc, but will detect a human body.

Hook up to floodlights combined with powerful sirens.

Rest assured any burglar popping in over the wall, will pop out again over the wall in no time.

I don't need an alarm inside the house I'm sleeping in, I need an alarm keeping them from coming inside in the first place!

Works wonders!

Would you rather be "in trouble" or would you rather be dead?

Better be sure that you can pull the trigger however.

Make friends with the security guys, i buy them food and drink ( not booze ) i ask them to pay special attention to my home when my wife and daughter are home alone, i often see him riding around on his bike at between 3 and 5 am when i return home,. prevention is better than cure, sensor spotlights coupled to cctv work too and they are cheap now, if you want some sort of peace of mind do it now ,. if you have to keep a gun under the bed means they have got too close, keep them out !

Can't the people in the village get together and have home alarms installed? Maybe some type of discount can be had if enough people sign up.

I know that if I were ever to live one of these villages, I would have a home security system.

TheWalkingMan

I agree, anyone in that business should be doing a door to door now with a copy of this subject,.

Home Security system with CCTV, motion sensors, loud alarm, one or two big dogs outside, one small dog inside, cooperate with neighbors, motion sensor floodlights in the dark corners, well protected doors and windows, pepper spray, that is about all you can do.

I will never stay in a house in Pattaya again. It is just not relaxing. Security service is a joke, wherever you stay!

Sad but so true.

I am opposed to violence, and would rather less guns in the world for sure, but if someone enters MY house and I feel my wife or daughter are in danger of death or sexual assault, I have no problems dropping a few bullets in the criminal.

If one enters your house, can you be exonerated if you shoot him for self defense?

does he have to have a gun too? or a knife?

in the west you'd be ok to protect your family. how about here? any factual information on this?

Have 2 guns in your home, one for you and one to put in the hand of the dead lowlife,.self defence ?

Not the best idea. :o

BTW what do you think will happen if you piss the wife off one night. :D:D:D

BTW people from the USA should not be allowed Hand guns as they can't keep them away from the children, who think they are toys. :D

Sometimes we forget the grass is always greener....................

Pal of mine lives in a lovely village in Cheshire. Every ned form Manchester, Liverpool and a far away as London, has prowled the streets of this village at some stage. He has been knocked over five times with his entire family being tied up at knife point on one occasion. If asked, I think he would like the odds in Patters better than where he is now.

My house was broken into during the day and it is very close to your village. The wife made me put security grills on the inside of the house as well as outside plus security grills on the back fence. I also purchase window and door alarms at Homeworks. We had a number of breakins at our village so it may have been someone who knew our village, it could be the same for your village.

Could you legally put a sign up outside your house saying in Thai:

"I have a gun and will shoot to kill anybody who breaks into my house"

Even if you don't own a gun?

Not even sure this is legal in the UK....?

Posted

Some alternative sign ideas:

TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT!

survivors will be shot again!

or

(Picture of Rottweiler): I can get to the gate in 15 seconds ... can you?

For those comparing with UK, probably not a good place to compare with, seems to be the most criminal place in Europe these days...

the problem is that most of the burglars are very uneducated and cant read thai anyway....i have a sign saying i have an alarm(in thai)and they have still tried to break in (i have an alarm, the box is outside and motion sensors).i find that if you are locked from the inside then is difficult to get in as they dont have access to these padlocks so would have to make a lot of noise which they dont want to do.

my advice is beef up your security to higher levels....i have high walls with metal spikes, dog, motion sensor lights, motion sensor alarm, door and window alarms, internal door and window locks, sword, knives, knuckle duster.all in all this means a burglar would have to make some noise to gain entrance which at least would give me some advance warning so i could at least arm myself!!!

most burglars are deterred by a barking dog and move onto a quieter house......so maybe one of the cheapest/easiest options.....but yes i know there is a chance of it being poisoned by a determined thief.

i think next best option ....the internal locks.....as most thiefs can bypass standard doorlocks.....even i can and im no locksmith!!!

go around your own house and imagine you are a burglar.....where is it easier to get in......and make it harder.

the village should beef up there security staff also.....more staff and more regular patrols between 12 pm and 5/6pm...every 30 mins or so,this village is known to burglars as an easy target so once it is known as more difficult then they will just move to next easier village.

I thought I made clear by saying that anyone carrying a gun should be prepared to shoot first.

Would I rather be dead or rotting in a Thai jail for murder? Probably I'd rather be dead.

Better still, don't carry a gun and give the burglars what they want. You'll likely be out of pocket but alive, and not in any trouble with the law.

This is all academic anyway, because I'm sure that a foreigner would not be able to get a licence to legally own a gun.

Your wife could get a licence to legally have it in the house and you could shoot the varmit dead in self defense and your wife would not get raped and you might beat the rap in court. :o

Interesting thread. I live on the 'Darkside', on a big estate of over 200 houses, their is a mixture of high walls, and low walls, on my soi, we have mainly low walls, so it is easy to see if someone is entering your property, a house further up the soi installed high walls, and they was robbed the following week!

That's fine if you have a wife.

Good luck!

Is it better for your wife to be raped and you both live than both of you die in a gun fight?

Why would you assume that you'd be better in a gun fight than the professional criminals?
