This lady, as far as I can tell, is sweet and has a job working in BKK as we talking daily. She seems to be the traditional type, working not visiting bars and so forth. I am going to visit her in Aug and just wanted to know how I can tell if she for real.

You should spend a reasonable amount of time with her & determine if she is being honest & open about her life now and her past. She should be OK to answer any & all questionss you may have and you should be the same with her. As for dowery, I personally don't like the idea, but you can offer to pay the wedding expenses. May here claim they get the dowery returned. Maybe so, but I never saw such a case. Use your own judgement about this, in accordance with the money you have available. I assume you are intending to take her back to your home country to live. If you are planning to live in Thailand with her, I would move here first & spend several months getting to know her. Ask her to wait 5 years for you to get treatment. When you get out of hospital if she is still waiting then you might be in with a chance!

OK, I'll play. First, make sure it's a lady. I can't tell anymore at first glance. However, the prettier they are, the more likely they're ladyboys. You like? I married a Thai girl that i met on the internet. We talked for days on msn. But i first went to see her and had a holiday with her on samui. Then i asked her to stay with me in Holland for 3 months to see if we were a good match. I was lucky that she just finished UNI and did not have job obligations at that time. So that was a posibility. Now im living with her for 2,5 years now in Thailand and all things went well. I just would not rush it if i were you and try to see how she is in day to day life. Its different then on a Holiday or chat.

I did not pay a dowery, her mother wanted it I did not. In the end it was not payed. I payed other things like furniture and stuff for our home (my wifes of course). So far all is good and i think i found the one for me.

But there are a lot of dangerous ones too. I was fooled by my first thai wife and that cost me a lot of money. At that time i had no experience with thais and that was my mistake. She looked like a normal girl but in the end she changed and it all went bad. Just be carefull and think would you marry a european woman that fast after having met her only a short time ?

And if you 'buy her' (pay a sin sot) she can walk away from you the very next day and you will lose all you paid for her. So, take a long time to get to know her. There are other people that run a business of applying and replying to internet sites for these unfortunate ones with the proviso that they get 10% of the sin-sot. Which apparently can be quite lucrative as whether you want to believe this or not.....some ferang that come over here get taken for 2..3..4 million sin-sot, because they dont know any better and are love struck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have expressed disbelief to her but she swears that she has known this to happen.

Even though at first I found my ex Thai wife to be sweet (in LOS) later on (when she got to the UK) I found her to be very boring and stupid, badly educated, did not understand culture, did not want to understand culture and became very lazy very quickly. As all she wanted was a divorce and a British passport. She was a hideous evil liar (like most Thais)

I have personally known and met several of these "agents" who are assisting Thai ladies meet the man of their dreams on the internet. They (the ladies) need this service because they speak little or no English and/or are not computer literate. They may pay 2,000 to 5,000 bht per month for such service. The matchmaker may take a piece of the dowery, which I have heard can be as high as 50%. Others may charge a "flat fee", if the couple gets married. The ones I knew were charging 100,000 to 150,000 bht. You don't have to guess who is going to pay these costs in the end - the Farang. Obviously, these "Cupids Assistants" have a stake in inflating the dowery as high as they can get away with.

I am in a very happy, very loving, close family relationship, living in Thailand, further south in Trang. My wife who is an ex Hotel Manager is a gem. The saddest thing i ever saw was when i was on business in Abu Dhabi about four years ago. I got talking to a guy who was a Diver for an oil company, so made lots and lots of money. He told me he had a beautiful Thai wife ( i said nothing). He showed me her photo and she was indeed a stunner. He had just come back from two weeks off shore and was waiting in the hotel bar to meet his wife, as she was not at home but out 'shopping'. He had bought a bunch of roses and a bottle of fizz and was waiting patiently. Then in walked Miss world,!! his wife was wearing a leather cat suit with an arm full of shopping bags and was clearly pi**ed. He kissed her and gave her the flowers, at which point she grabbed them, went in to a rage and bashed them on the bar breaking all the heads off, shouting 'I don't want flowers, i want Gold!!" He was obviously both visibly upset and embarrassed. I would personally have picked the b***h up and thrown her in to the sea over the pier out side the hotel. It is the situation i have just described (and witnessed personally) that leads to the problems concerning opinions of Thai Marriages. Some are money grabbers, others are normal truly loving people, but isn't that the same anywhere?
