Hi,

Sorry to be a bit dim but I have read many, many mails and still am a little confused!

My wife and I, both English passport holders, would like to return to Thailand, ideally indefinitely to carry out charity work in the north. Unfortunately we do this independently so cannot get a visa from a charity as official workers.

We are financially independent but not yet 50 years old so cannot get a retirement visa.

We would like to learn to speak the language so an education visa is a possibilty but we also have a young baby so only one of us could study. This of course would also only get us a year but that would be better than nothing.

I have also read about multi entry visas which seem to get you 6 months but am not sure if we would qualify.

If we have options and someone could spell it out so even I "get it" then we would be grateful.

Thanks

Chris

From reports I've read, the consulate at Hull seems to be lenient about granting Non-immigrant "O" multi-entry visas. Perhaps you could apply for one of those. They are normally valid upto a year, you get stamped into Thailand for 90 days, then exit and return for another 90 day permitted to stay period until the visa expires. If timed properly you can get almost 15 months before having to apply for another visa.

I'm sure others can offer more details about the visa, and you may need to consider the work permit aspect.

As Lite Beer pointed out you need a work permit to do any kind of work, including volunteer work. In practise nobody will make a big deal of it, as long as you stay away from (polital) conflicts.

I can only advise you to try and fine a charty under which umbrella you can do your volunteer work. A local school or hospital would be fine, but there are also many different foundations working in the North. It would get you a visa and work permit, but would also give you a better change to apply for donations from companies and embassies. In my personal experience it makes a lot of difference to have an organisation behind you.

thanks for the replies. Why Hull and not London/Vancouver etc??

It makes sense to try and get a letter of invitation and/or affiliation to a charity and this would definitely be the long term goal but it would be good if we could just know that we had 12 - 15 months in the bag so we could do more research over there and make sure it is definitely where we want to be.

If you can get this type of visa simply by saying "I am visiting friends" why doesn't everyone do it that way? I understand leaving every 90 days or so isn't ideal but better than the old visa run method.

The Hull Consulate is often mentioned because they are very lenient in their interpretation of the rules. Most consulates would not issue an "O" visa unless you are related or married to a Thai citizen. London and other places have a track record of being more strict

about the qualifications.

So you simply apply for the visa saying you wish to visit friends/travel around a bit etc?

Do you think if we had a letter from a registered charity they are likely to accept this. I ask because we have an Aussie buddy who runs a tiny charity - doesn't really need us although we would help him where required - who would do this for us.

Hull is probably the only place you would get this Visa for visiting friends .

Do not forget you would still need a work permit even for helping your friend out with his charity.

If his charity is registered and he is willing to help you that is your best bet. Whit his letter you can obtain a non-immigrant visa vfor 3 months. Once in Thailand you should be able, with some paperwork form the charity, to get a workpermit and extension of stay for 1 year and every year after that. Just what you want.

That would mean no 90 day border hopping, only reporting to immigration every 90 days (which can be done by mail).

this invitation letter involves u being invited by the law office, not the charity. and its a 1yr multiple entry. would then leave u plenty of time to get established with ur charity work.

Hi,

Is it possible to buy your way in if you are under 50?? Also is it highly likely that you could get an Ed visa if you genuinely wanted to study the language? Also is there any word on the street that the old visa run system may ever be a possibility again?

I am guessing that the above is your question - although can not be sure from your post format.

There is the Elite card for those with cash. You can easily obtain an ED visa for language study - just can not be extended on yearly basis (only 3 months at a time). Is there ever a time when every rumor possible is not a rumor?
