Thai Tv + English Subtitle

One way of learning Thai is by hearing it, while knowing the translation. An easy way to pick-up language knowledge.

Now I have True-visions. As far as I know, they only offer thai subtitle for foreign soundtrack. (I believe they absolutely not care about their farang customers)

Is there any channel out there that offers english subtitle for thai soundtrack?

(maybe on those blue satellite dishes?)

God forbid !! That would enable Thais to learn English. Next thing they'll be watching BBC and CNN instead of the Thai government run news. They might even learn about the world outside Thailand.

Some movies have English subtitles - however the grammar and choice of words used is often more amusing than accurate - varies with the film/people subtitling.

Try learning numbers and a few words relating to weather then tune in the radio after the news.

The names of different areas within Thailand help punctuate the flow of the weather report.

Thais can already learn to understand English, as they have the thai translation in the subtitle. I want to do the same but the other way round.

The real question is how/where to find these movies other than by renting/buying DVD's.

Well, DVDs are the easiest way I think. Most Thai movies unfortunately only come with English subtitles when they're shown in the cinema, but if you rent/buy English DVDs they often also have an additional dubbed Thai soundtrack and both English and Thai subtitles so you can use whichever combination you feel like. The translation quality is only dodgy on the pirated DVD's, genuine ones and any with a dubbed Thai soundtrack by-and-large have pretty good translations.

My wife and I watched "Lust Caution" playing the Thai soundtrack (there was no English) with English subtitles. It was awful. They translated "ยาฝรั่ง" as "Guava Medicine"!

As noted, though, the translation on the genuine CD's is quite good. Good suggestion.

Don't care much about the quality of the translation. Actually the crooked translation provides a good feeling about the setup of Thai language.

Are you sure you consider this is a way to learn Thai? The variance in what was scripted and said by an actor in a film and either the Thai dubbed or subtitled version can be miles apart. My OH has commented that some DVD movies' Thai subtitles are so far wrong that she has a greater understanding of the plot with English subtitling when the English dialogue is either too fast or uses English slang too much.

Do not assume that either dubbing or sub-titles provide translation of sufficient clarity to pick out words more complex that the most basic short phrases, yes,no, where, when etc.

Comics and children's cartoons are probably a better place to start.

Western cartoons are available dubbed in Thai on VCD for about 10 Baht a pop.

Thai TV News might also help (online) as the shorter items would be easier to follow.

VOA News in Thai is good because they also include snippets of English. And if you know the international news for that day you can start trying to understand the news items. The main problem with news is of course the large number of official words you need to learn.

If you are just looking for some movies and lakorns with subs you can try www.crunchyroll.com After a couple of uses you will need to register, but the registration is free.

The subs are not professional, but it is enough to understand what is going on.

There are also movies and dramas from other countries in Asia on there. To find Thailand just search thdrama or thmovie and a list pops up.

oh sibeymai (sabaidii mai?) i cannot but agree. english is the way to hel_l. no other country teaches their students from age 6 to 19 for 13 years and all they can say is: 'hello sir, what's your name, where do you come from'. at least they cannot understand the american propaganda, only their own governments bloody lies....................
